Cockabilly Roadshow - Pourhouse (Various/Circus)
This NYC group does a little of everything - circus, ballad, burlesque, and yes, music. This is a traveling group from the main production up in NYC but it's good and Raleigh lucked out and got a tour stop. This should be a great night of entertainment and music. Check out some of thier spots on You Tube.

Small Ponds - Tir Na Nog (Indie)
Local Faves come by and play at the local beer, local band night once again. It's a great band, Caitlin has a tremendous voice and this will be a great show.

Allies Emerge - Shakedown Street (Psychedelic/Electronica/Indie)
Raliegh based purveyors of experimental psychedelic, electronic, indie rock, these guys will most certainly have an "interesting" set of music that will range the extremes. I like their sound - its a unique one and its changing but it's certainly worth a listen if you are in the NCSU area...

Music Picks for Wednesday, August 18

Peter Lamb & The Wolves - Humble Pie (Jazz)
The mainstay of the Raleigh Jazz scene, these guys will tear it up tonight at the Humble Pie... Good crowd, Great Music and lots of dancing going on.. All in all, a great evening for relaxing jazz and meeting with friends.

Old Habits & Acoustic Manner - The Brewery (Roots/Folk/Bluegrass)
I'm really glad to see the Brewery branching out a bit and getting some different music in their venue. This is a great place to see music and what better than two of the best folk/bluegrass bands in town... Old Habits has made great strides in establishing itself as one of the best in their class - and they have done it quickly. The Thompson Brothers have put together a great set of musicians and they seem to get better every time out. It's an exciting band, great music and a great mix of original songs and some great covers that they seem to put their own stamp on.
www.old-habits.com
Acoustic Manner is the former Barefoot Manner group (-1) and they are playing their brand of Bluegrass with the same fervor as before.... This will most certainly be a great show - so come on out and check out a great night of music...

**Hot**The Civil Wars - Pourhouse (Indie/Roots)
Perhaps the most intriguing band of the night - The Civil Wars - treats Raleigh to a stop. Claims to fame for these two include a recent stint of their music on Greys Anatomy. Their music style is a powerful, powerful duet of great voices - and it will blow you away. Think Glen Hansard & MarketaIrglova - it's that good! They have a whole bunch of great songs - but if you only have time to listen to one, Poison & Wine is the one - its a champion - and now is a great time to catch them while they are under the radar...
Madi Diaz opens the evening and she is a talented vocalist in her own right - what a great night of music!
The Civil Wars can be found on you tube

Megan Van Vleet, Vintage Fresh & Steve Ploog - Deep South (Acoustic indie Rock)
This is a solid set of Acoustic Indie Rock - kicked off by Megan Van Vleet. Her guitar and vocals have that garage, unpolished touch to it - and you know, it works... It's a comfortable, soothing sound for the ears and the soul. She has an amazing range on her vocals and her passion and enthusiasm for the music pulls the listener in and keeps you captivated until the set is over...
Great stuff! - Check out "Careful with your heart girl"
www.myspace.com/meganvanvleet
Vintage Fresh brings their version indie rock - w/ a dash of soul thrown in for good measure. This Raleigh band is a fixture on the college circuit and their sound is not unlike that of the Blue Dogs.... They have a great set of music in store that get you groovin and maybe even dancing.
www.myspace.com/vintagefreshness
Steve Ploog hails from Merced, CA and brings his style of Acoustic Rock to the stage for a set of indie rock with a touch of psychedic thrown in to give it that West Coast feel. He has a great vocal range and excercises it very easily in his songs to give them a distinct and unique feel.
Check out his set for a mellow feel - and chill out and drink a cold one and relax.

Loose Screws - Shakedown Street (Jam/Cover)
Local band - very local venue - talented musicians - esp the lead vocals - good times abound!

Music Picks for Thursday, Aug 5

Bubonik Funk, Leaving Venus & Jordan Okrend - Deep South (Funk, Acoustic, Indie)
This is a pretty solid lineup of different bands - and makes for a great night of music...
Bubonik Funk is a Charlotte based funk band that seems to blend funk, rock and soul all together for their soulful funk sound... It's a real solid sound and the band brings an energy and enthusiasm that is contagious and gets the crowd going and grooving - just take a listen to "Position of Power" to see what I mean....
www.myspace.com/bubonikfunk
Jordan Okrend is a great acoustic rocker with good vocals to match - he mainly plays most of his own stuff but has been known to throw in a cover or two to jack up the crowd... This is easy listening stuff but it is certainly worth a listen....
www.myspace.com/jordanokrendmusic
Indy Rockers Leaving Venus have a kooky cool indie/retro sound to them.... It's like an indie band of today discovering the 80s - at least the vocal stylings.... Clear, crisp yet distant... Check out "Dead Men Dont Tell Tales" and you know what I mean.... In fact all of their songs are great listens.... Check out the show!
www.myspace.com/leavingvenus

Mike Mickxer Trio - Hibernian (Jazz)
Mike and krewe tear it up at another night at the Hibernian - I saw him out last night - so he is ready to jam out...

80s Party Feat. I Was Totaly Destroying It, Jews & Catholics & more.....
This is going to be one big 80s party. 3-4 Bands in costume doing original and 80s covers plus djs spinning the best 80s music in between.... The party kicks off at 9pm with the headliners and their 7" release party feat "In Big Country" hitting the stage around 11:45 or so....
This show is a MUST!

Peter Lamb and the Wolves - Humble Pie (Jazz)
Its that time again for the Bi-Monthly Jazz Jam. This is your opportunity to experience some of the best jazz in the Raleigh. Super Cool Amosphere and Venue - and great crowd as well.
Show is around 9:30-11:30 (two sets).
www.myspace.com/peterlambandthewolves

No Eyes & Zorch - Berkeley Cafe (Psychedelic Rock)
No Eyes is a Boone band that has a brand of music that has a lot of characteristics of Psychedelic, Indie and Garage rock. The musicianship is solid and they are a solid jam band that will keep you entertained for sure.

Zorch is an Austin band that is like a hopped up Particle. Very creative and I like their energy and different sounds/vocal styles in putting together their sound... Very interesting and certainly worth a listen on a Wednesday night. Check out their song "Zut Alors" - its exactly what I'm talking about - unique sound and altogether a solid night of music.
