Music Picks for Saturday, Jan 30

The Slackers Bring The Horns to The Pourhouse!
This band from New York brings their interesting blend of Ska , Funk, Soul - with a little little Reggae mixed in.... I saw these guys at a show @ the 9:30 club in DC last year and it was like someone had taken the PieTasters and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and put them together....
These guys promise to bring a great show - and offer some music that Raleigh does not get to see too much. If you like The Wailers, PieTasters, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or Soulive, you will like these guys. Check them out on myspace www.myspace.com/theslackers
Another good band, Doco gets the show started around 10ish.....

The Blue Dogs - Berkeley Cafe (Regional Jam Rock)
This Band needs no introduction - Doing Charleston, SC proud - they've been around as long as we have - tearing up the Southeast... I can't remember how many times I've seen them at Smiths in ATL or here in Raleigh... Great Band, Great Music. I wish the band would adopt the rendition of "Never Been to Spain" that the local band The Dune Dogs play - replacing Oklahoma for Ocracoke.....
Raliegh Band - Old Habits opens the show - which promises to be a GREAT show....

The T's - Slims (Rock)
Great local music set with the T's.... A great laid back back - I love their sets @ Sadlacks on a Spring/Summer Evening.... The Slims show promises to be great as well.... Man Will Destroy Himself & Destroyed Traditon open the night around 10pm or so...

Donna The Buffalo - 2nd Night @ Lincoln Theatre....
Who is up for a 2nd helping? The Believers open the show - same as 1st night....

Music Picks for Friday, Jan 29th

Donna the Buffalo opens a 2 night stand at the Lincoln Theatre
I'm not sure this band needs much introduction. This band has been on the major regional and national scene for years now... There are very few places that they have not played. This a truly a treat for Raleigh to have this band for not one, but two nights... They are simply amazing with their ability to play a wide variety of music in one set - from folk to rock, to Zydeco and back again... This is a treat and certainly not a show to be missed. The Believers will kick the show off around 9:30 or so...

American Aquarium - Pourhouse (Rock / Rockabilly)
This Raleigh band is a crowd favorite and is in the midst of a national tour. They are a fresh mix of old and new - with a healthy dose of folk tossed in for good measure. If you like Wilco or The Hold Steady, be sure to check these guys out. It should be a great show... Check them out on myspace www.myspace.com/americanaquarium
Martha Ann Motel & The Motion Pictures kick things off around 10 or so...

Music Picks for Thursday, Jan 28th

Scrapomatic tears it up @ The Pourhouse (Soul/Blues/Folk Rock)
This band from Brooklyn, NY brings a crisp mix of folk, blues and soul that is perfect for a laid back lounge. How this will play out in thee Pourhouse remains to be seen but I'm excited to see this band. This is a real treat to have an up and coming band like this come through town. Check them out on MySpace - www.myspace.com/Scrapomaticnyc
They are not to be missed....
David Titchener & Katherine Roach kick things off around 10-10:30....

The SuperSuckers - Berkely Cafe (Rock n Roll)
This band from Seattle are a bunch of Hard Core rockers that are going to have one hell of a show. they are the self proclaimed "Best Rock N' Roll Band in the World" and are sure not to disappoint for those of you who love solid rock n roll - the way it should be... As a good pre-game, rest up, and get ready for some cussin and plenty of birds.... They should be on a roll as they are touring the country with the likes of the Drive By Truckers... Check them out on MySpace at www.myspace.com/supersuckers
The Straight 8s will start things off around 8-8:30 or so....

Bumble - The Busy Bee - (Electronica)
This is the weekly fix of Electronica at the Hive - upstairs of the Busy Bee - one of the better sets in town. I caught their show last week and it was SOLID.
Check it out for those of you who love the block rockin beats....

Music Picks for Wednesday, Jan 27th

Dale Watson & The Lone Stars bring Honky Tonk to The Pourhouse

Dale Watson is one of the great Texas "Honky Tonk" bands. He hails from the great city of Austin and is truly a crowd favorite. Dale used to make Raleigh a regular stop back in the days of the Hideaway BBQ and I'm glad to see him back. Listening to him is like taking a step back in time and listening to ol'Waylon and Willie or hell, even, Marty Robbins...... Put on your cowboy boots and your stetson and get on out - this is a show not to be missed.....

Lee Sherman - this one is for you......

Raleigh Favorite "The Stray Dogs" opens the and get the crowd warmed up with a solid set of Honky Tonk - Raleigh style!

Dirk Quinn Band , Zegg, Major Magick @ The Pourhouse
Three Great Jam Bands await those of you who wish to venture out tonight....

Zegg is our local jam band - lots of catchy tunes - catch these guys tonight and out and about their many local shows...

Major Magick kicks off the night for this FREE show.... This will be a SOLID show...

Johnny Folsom Four - Pourhouse (Country) - with Guests Wrenn Magnum and Hank Sinatra

This promises to be a very excellent night of Country Music - Johnny Folsom is a Johnny Cash cover band, Wrenn Magnum is an Elvis cover, and Hank Sinatra, well - they cover everything with their rockabilly music. For those of you who caught his show last week, this will be more of the same - along with two other fine country cover bands...

For Those of you who didn't or couldn't catch the Friday show of ZOSO - tonight is your night for a 2nd helping at the Lincoln Theatre.....

Music Picks for Friday, Jan 22

The Old Ceremony - The Pourhouse (funk rock)

The Old Ceremony is a very talented band out of Chapel Hill area. They remind me on a great band out of the New Orleans area - Bag of Donuts - maybe even sortof like Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes. Closer to Raleigh, they sound a bit like Wilco. They bring an interesting mix of rock, funk, and vocals. This is definitely a show worth checking out . Floating Action will get things started around 10:30 or so....

Swagger - The Dive Bar (southern rock)

Swagger was introduced to me by an old friend -and I'm impressed. I'm looking forward to this show - they bring a solid southern rock base and some solid guitar and vocals.
This promises to be a upbeat - high energy show - certainly one not to miss....

Zoso - Lincoln Theatre (Led Zepplin coverband)

Zoso bills itself as "The Ultimate Led Zepplin Experiance" - they are certainly one of the better coverbands for Led Zepplin - enough said! If that wasn't enough enough, Night Prowler - an AC/DC coverband opens the evening.......

Music Picks for Thursday, Jan 21

BALLYHOO! - Lincoln Theatre - (jam - reggae)

Ballyhoo is an powerhouse band from Aberdeen, MD and are well-known in the Washington D.C and Tidewater areas. They play a range of music from indie pop to reggae - very interesting and all good - reminds me a bit of the PieTasters (minus the horns)...

Good stuff - check it out. Jam Bands Doco and 5th Generation open the show around 10pm - this promises to be a good night......

Bumble - The Hive @ Busy Bee - (electronica)

As usual, Bumble will bring a solid night of electronic music to the patrons at the hive. This is always a solid set of electronic music for those of you who love this stuff...

Chasing Edison - The Pourhouse (jam rock, funk)

Chasing Edison is an interesting band from Charlotte. If you like bands like Perpetual Groove, Particle, Widespread Panic, or Leftover Salmon, you will very much enjoy Chasing Edison. They bring a good musical mix that any good jam band must do. These guys bring it - a great music of guitar, bass, organ and drums (i wish they has some horns).... This is definitely a show to catch... WEdnesday night is Mug night at the pourhouse - so this is an added bonus....
Rocket Surgeon opens the night around 10 - Chasing Edison will likely take the stage around 11:30....

Music Picks for Saturday, Jan 16th

After a Slammed Friday with two top-notch acts, Saturday brings three fun shows:

Yo Mamma's Big Fat Booty Band - Pourhouse (w/ Family Funk)
This is show is perfect for those of you needing you weekly Funk Fix. This band is one of the Funk stalwarts of the area. A great party band with a mix of their own stuff and everybody's funk favorites - perfect for letting your hair down and partying... Family Funk opens to get things going. Show should start around 10-10:30....

General Johnson & Chairmen of the Board - Lincoln Theatre
Either you have to have been living in a cave - or you're "not from round here" if you dont know this band. "Carolina Girls" "Gone Fishing" and "Just a little more time" - are Summer Party Songs of this area and in every jukebox in this area. There was a time.... Remember Alive after Five - when there was no just thing as Fayetteville St??? Chairmen of the Board played the last show every year..... How about Longbranch.... Although I stuck to my guns and NEVER went inside that place - I do sometimes wish I went to a COB there.... Heard it was mayhem..... Saturday's show at the Lincoln promises to be the same...... The Executives open the madness....
Be there or be square....

Hank Sinatra - Berkeley Cafe - (Rockabilly / Honkytonk) - (for fans of Dash RipRock, Rebel Son, & Unknown Hinson)
For those of you who like a little cuttin up Rockabilly/HonyTonk, Hank Sinatra will do what Rebel Yell does for you. Cussin, and chantin, Songs about drinkin, fartin, women, and wild times... All fun stuff and in "good" taste....
These guys are VERY talented musicians - if you have a hankering for some Country - this is your stop for the night.....

So many shows... So little time......

Music Picks for Friday, Jan 15th

Sierra Hull & HWY 11 - Berkeley Cafe - (Bluegrass / Vocals)
Sierra Hull is a protege of Allison Kraus - and some say better. A youngster on the music scene, her mandolin and vocal skills are simply amazing. She got her start a fiddler's convention about 4-5 years ago - caught the eye of some fellow musicians and eventually Allison Kraus. Under the mentoring of Kraus, Sierra has put together a solid band in Hwy 11, has toured with Kraus and Union Station and has made quite a name for herself. She is essentially to the mandolin what Amanda Shaw has been to the fiddle. This is truly a treat and yet again another case where Raleigh has great music coming through it's venues. Check out her stuff on Myspace and YouTube

This show also includes:

David Olney with guest Sergio Webb (Rockabilly / HonkyTonk)
David is one of the great unsung songwriters on the scene right now - he also is an excellent guitarist and vocalist. Straight out of the cut of the Texas Hill Country music flavor (with a touch of the swamp soul) - David teams up with Sergio Webb on a national tour in support of the Album - "One Tough Town" - This is most certainly a perfect night cap to the above show. An excellent night of music at the Berkeley for sure! Be sure to check out their music on myspace and youtube

Saturday also hosts another great show:

Carbon Leaf - Lincoln Theatre - (with guests Knock out Roses)
These guys have been tearing up the scene for YEARS! I can remember catching them in the OBX for shows at either The Pit or Kellys - for quite some time it seemed that either they, or Fighting Gravity was there everytime we blew through town...
Anyhoo - for those of you who do not know them - if you like Phish or Widespread Panic or Wilco - you will most certainly dig these guys!
This is going to be a great show.... Too bad I can't be in two places at the same time.....

Music Picks for Thursday, Jan 14th

Bobby Lee Rogers ROCKS The Pourhouse Thursday Night!

Bobby Lee Rogers trio is in town on Thurs night and will rock. An Atlanta native, he has been a fixture of the Atlanta Music scene for many years and now has a standing weekly gig at Zuffys. He is an extremely talented guitarist and singer and together with legendary organist Ike Stubblefield, their music builds slowly into an organ-driven frenzy - only back down into the smooth strings of Marcus Williams and even Jimmy Herring - He will captivate the audience with some soul wrenching songs such as "The Beast" "OverDrive" "Body in the Lake".
This is truly a treat - he is one of my Faves and the show is not to be missed. Please check out his site www.bobbyleerodgers.com to catch most of his music.
Soulgrass Rebelion and/or Future are the opening act - this show is going to be a gem for the week.

For those of you needing an Electronica fix - Bumble - will be playing tonight at Busy Bee check it out - usually one of the better electronica shows of the week.

Music Picks for Wednesday January 13th

Hey Everybody!

Wednesday is a Great day for Raleigh Music! We have two great shows at the Lincoln Theatre and the Pourhouse tonight!

Frank Zappa! - Lincoln Theatre - 7pm Doors, 8pm Show.
I'm not sure I have to describe this - it is legend.. For those of you who know and love this man - you will be there! This will be a good show -AND it will be an early show - likely home before midnight as it is a school night....

Jill Andrews and Amelia's Mechanics - Pourhouse - 9 or 10pm.

- Jill Andrews is formerly of the everybodyfields - she brings a crisp vocal style that reminds me of Edie Brickell or she could have made the Indigo Girls a trio. It's wonderful, it's captivating and it's excellent! Check out "These Words" and "Sweetest in the Morning" on Myspace!

- Amelia's Mechanics remind me of a band from few years ago - "Sweet Bye & Bye. Their blend of bluegrass and folksy southern rock highlights the vocals and strings. It is truly a treat and and excellent opener for Jill Andrews. Check them out on Myspace - and listen to one of my faves - "Johnny Cash Jeans"

Monday 01/04: Rumble Sessions (Electronica) - Big Easy - Fayetteville St, Raleigh. Rumble sessions is Monday's Answer to Sunday's Neu Romance @ the Albi, as well as Thursday's "Bumble" @ Busy Bee. The Dj's change from week to week - it's worth checking out for those of you who dig Electronic Music

Wednesday 01/06: Technoiz (Electronica) - Pourhouse - Blount St, Raleigh. Technoiz is featuring Orgavin, Cheezface and DJ Charlie Burnett. While I've not heard Charlie Burnett before - Orgavin and Cheezface are strong - and reccomended. I do not believe Cheezface has a website but check out Orgavin @ myspace.com/orgavin7.
Wednesday is also Mug Nite @ Pourhouse - never a bad deal where $3 fills your mug with anything on tap...

Thursday 01/07 Grayson Capps (Rockabilly - Nola Style) - Berkely Cafe - W. Martin St, Raleigh. Grayson Capps is a 20 yr veteran of the Nola Music scene. One of his first big breaks came in 2004 when he wrote the title track for a Movie "A love song for Bobby Long" featuring John Travolta and Scarlett Johannson. He is a true gem and this show is not to be missed. Check him out at www.graysoncapps.com or on You Tube - great songs like New Orleans Waltz, Washboard Lisa, Drink a Little Poison, ect will get you going and keep you going throughout the set.

Thursday also has Bumble (Electronica) - Busy Bee - Wilmington St, Raleigh. This is a solid offering of Electronic House Music - DJ's vary - check it out upstairs at the Hive - and sample a brew from their superb selection.

Friday 01/08, The Rosebuds, Megafaun, Lonnie Walker - Pourhouse - Blount St, Raleigh. Three Great Bands - all in one night in one setting. Lonnie Walker will kick things off - Followed by local band Megafaun - fresh off their European Tour. This is some great Jam/Rock/Alt styled music which will Blend into the Indie/Alt music of another great local band - The Rosebuds. This promises to be a GREAT show. It is another show not to be missed. Check out both Rosebuds and Megafaun on Myspace under their band names.

Saturday 01/09, Tristan Clopet - Berkely Cafe, W. Martin St, Raleigh. Tristan Clopet's ability to blend Funk and Blues - with high quality vocal skills is simply amazing. He is quickly working his way up the musical rankings via Miami and NYC and has just finished a UK tour that included a gig with world-renowned Sandi Thom. His musical styling is a fusion that is laid back - and makes for some easy listening. This is highly reccomended.

Saturday also features a 2nd helping of the Rosebuds and Megafaun (with Hammer no more the Fingers) at the Pourhouse - for those of you who didn't get enough on Friday night. The official line on this is that it is "sold out" but you can get around this one of two ways: 1. Go to Schoolkids Records - they will usually have a few tix left or 2. Welcome to RDU Music Listings!

Hey Everbody!

2010 is now upon us and as one of my New Years Resolutions - I wanted to create a platform by which Music Lovers can easily find recommended shows based on genre - and similarity with larger better-known bands. In the 10 years that I have been in the Raleigh music scene, we have seen tremendous growth with the opening of several new venues and unfortunately the closure of a couple as well (R.I.P. Kings). Through this time, Raleigh has quietly established itself as a solid stop for regional and national touring bands as it, along with Charlotte (and to a lesser Extent Asheville and Richmond), is a convenient stop between the Major Markets of Atlanta and D.C. Traditionally these bands stopped almost Exclusively at Cats Cradle but now Raleigh has some venues that can and do compete with the The Cradle to expand music offerings and allow those of us who live in Raleigh the convenience of forgoing the 30-45 drive to/from the concert. The only way this is going to continue to grow is for us to get people to the shows. We have top notch local, regional, and national talent playing here on a regular basis and sometimes there is only a handful of patrons at the shows.

I believe this is due to the fact that it is difficult to find out where the music is and it is nearly impossible to find out much about the bands or their musical styles. Our area lacks a source where the occasional music lover can go to find out what's playing, when, and where. I've talked to many, many people in the past couple of years and while they would love to catch a show or two, they do not know where to look or as is often the case - they find out about a show after it has passed. This blog will attempt to help let people know about shows in advance - match bands to genre's - and provide some solid info and links for the bands listed.

This is a work in progress and any feedback is welcomed.

Enjoy! Support Live Local Music and the Raleigh Music Scene.
