Wade Bowen – Berkeley Cafe (roots/country)
Wade Bowen walks the tightrope between contemporary country and the Old Style Texas Hill Country style of country music… What is produced is something that sounds at little of both – but also with an acoustic roots rock feel to it… Bottle into Gold & Walking along the Fenceline are excellent examples of this fusion. Wade has a great voice that has power and yet is gentle when need be – and his supporting cast of musicians complement the sound very, very well… For those of you in need of a good country fix, this is the perfect choice for you.

Futurebirds w/ Filthybird – Kings Barcade (Indie/Psychedelic)
Athens, GA based Futurebirds have a very unique sound that crosses lines of country, indie, surfer rock, experimental w/psychedelic flavorings. This conglomeration grows on you – quickly and you realize that this sounds works – very well. Their sounds are catchy and the vocal styles just make you want to sing along. Songs like Dirty D, MJB & Battle for Rome are excellent examples of their collective of sounds and how it works so well.. This has proven very successful for them as they have had successful Nationwide tours with fellow Athens natives Dead Confederate. Come check out the show, you will not be disappointed and will have a chance to catch some cutting edge music. Local faves, Filthybird will be opening the show with their own indie stylings… This will be a great show…

Archnemesis w/ Kraddy – Lincoln Theatre (Electronica)
Oh my god! That was my first reaction – this is HUGE to be hosting one of the heavyweights in this genre – they are on par with Pretty Lights and will bombard your senses with Hi-energy Lights, Sound and vibe that will be second to none… They are in the middle of a National tour and Raleigh is certainly fortunate to catch them on their way to SXSW… Rest up and be ready to dance till you drop as if this doesn’t get you moving, I don’t know what will… Kraddy, Love Light and others opening. Expect a 10:30-11 start for Archnemesis

That 1 Guy & Duende Mountain Duo – Lincoln Theatre (Experimental/Drums and Bass/Hip Hop)
One of the most unique musical experiences that you will see, That 1 Guy has devised his own sound (and instrument) The sound is very entertaining and comes out as a drums & bass/ beat vocals hybrid… A simple listen to Buttmachine or One will prove my point – this stuff is off the charts and he is on a international tour so catch him when you can… Raleigh is getting more than it’s fair share of music this week! As a great opener, Duende Mountain Duo – North Carolina based band who has the sound and the energy of Jam band of International acclaim – Particle….
This is going to be a great night of music and I would certainly recommend that this is not a show to be missed…

The Pietasters – Cats Cradle (ska/soul)
Anyone who went to college in the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast should know these guys as they have been a fixture of the college music scene for the better part of two decades in one form or another. Very few bands play this Funk/Soul/Ska and they fill a void left behind by the likes of Fighting Gravity & The Mighty Mighty Bosstones…. Get ready for a rollicking good time – lots of music, the powerful horns and dancing!! Rest up!
There is a hefty line up with Archbishops of Blount St, Petrovic Blasting Company & Brian Hill opening up the festivities as this is the Triangle Ska Fest – impromptu style… You can expect an 11pm start for the Pietasters…

Perpetual Groove - Lincoln Theatre (Indie/Jam)
Athens based Indie Jam that has evolved over the years from a strictly jam band into a rock/jam band with some great psychedelic undertones… Simply a great sound blending elements of traditional instrumentation, electronic sounds and some damn fine vocals. These guys are a local version of genre stalwarts Widespread Panic & Lotus. If you are a long time or a new fan (or about to become a fan) it is simply amazing on their musical transition over the years – the way cool thing about this transition, is they have retained elements of their psychedelic/electronica/jam background and have incorporated it into their Indy sound with the result a true winner for the region and even on their limited national tours… This promises to be a great night of music and jamming…

The Moderate – Pourhouse (Indie/Folk)
Washington DC based Indie Rockers with a folk/mex flair, catch them while they headline the 3rd Annual Benefit for the Tisch Brain Tumor Center. These guys have a decent following here and seem to be able to get down to the area every month or two… Great sound – with crisp instrumentals laying a solid foundation for the indie/progressive vocals… Certainly worth a listen as this sets up nicely for a great night of music for a worthy cause…. David Tichener and Whembly open the show – expect a 10:30 start for the headliners…

Acoustic Manner – Woodys @ City Market (Bluegrass)
Local Bluegrass band led by one of the best (and youngest) banjo players in the state. These guys have been all over the Triangle scene for the better part of 2yrs. Prior to that, some of them were in the Barefoot Manner which had a great Yonder Mountain String Band feel to it… Solid bluegrass and catchy tunes – this should give you a great little bluegrass fix if you are so inclined.

Steep Canyon Rangers – Lincoln Theatre (Bluegrass)
Quite Simply the best, (and best known) bluegrass band in North Carolina, this Brevard/Asheville band (who got their start in Chapel Hill) have been tearing up the scene for 10 years now. Along the way they have been collecting numerous accolades including Bluegrass Album of the Year and Emerging Artist Awards…. This current tour takes them on their way up to New York where they will appear on Late Night with David Letterman along with one of their long-time collaborators, Steve Martin (yes, THAT Steve Martin)….
These guys have a great sound – and the harmonization is second to none in the genre…. Between Woody’s guitar/vocals, Mike on vocals/mandolin, Graham on bass vocals/banjo and Nicky – one of the best fiddlers in the business – this band, while 10 yrs old, is just getting started…. If you have any interest in Bluegrass, this is the band to see – it is not to be missed!

The Love Hangover – Kings Barcade (variety)
The latest installment of local musicians pairing up to perform songs that will mend broken hearts and break whole hearts – will happen at Kings on Tuesday. Scattered at 5 locations around the Eastern Half of the US, what started as a simple performance has now become and annual tradition and seems to grow as the years go by. Now in its 12th year, this edition features 10 musicians from 9 different bands. Expect a mixed bag of songs for this evening jam session – it’s a nice relaxing “let your guard down” evening of music… A “love hangover”…

Natalia Zukerman & Garrison Starr – Berkeley Café (Roots/Folk)
Brooklyn based Natalia Zukerman has a voice and sound more associated with Delta Blues than Big City Blues. Her smooth vocals draw strong comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Amy Winehouse – quite a compliment. Her sound is genuine and it’s remarkable that a city girl can capture the tone and feeling of country blues within the confines of the 5 boroughs… She is also a very talented guitarist and has numerous accolades for her blues/folk/country abilities utilizing a picking and slide style that singularly is hard to master… This is truly a treat to catch her on this national tour….

Los Angeles based Garrison Starr began her career in and around the Memphis area – and that bluesy/rock has stayed with her – as she has added a contemporary flair to her sound that give the root/blue/folk sound a neu-indie edge to it. Check out “40 Days” for a sample of her unique sounds – and the vocals that can be compared to Sharon Van Etten…. Garrison brings and energy and a style to the stage that really rounds out the music experience. If you like the “Indigo Girls” – you most certainly will not be disappointed…

Lubriphonic – Pourhouse (Funk/Blues)

Chicago based Lubriphonic ranks right up there with New Orleans greats Karl Dennison’s Tiny Universe, Greyboy Allstars or Dumpstafunk. In fact, they have played with all of them and more over the years… What more can you say – horn infused blues/funk with an electro pop edge… It doesn’t get much better than this. It’s been a while since these guys have been in town and they have been quite busy, touring the world and putting out a new album that features none other than Ivan Neville….
This is truly a great night of music and a rare treat for us here in Raleigh to really experience some of the best blues/funk on the scene right now…

Seven Nations – Berkeley Café (Celtic/Folk)

If you are a fan of Scythian, Enter the Haggis or The Battleground Band, This Orlando based band will most certainly impress you. Their blend of Celtic and folk/rock ties all the best of the genres together. With a mellow vocal approach that is reminiscent of The Tragically Hip, Seven Nations brings a pop edge to a timeless classic style of music. Raleigh is fortunate to catch a show while these guys are on an Eastern Seaboard tour. This is a great night to listen to some great Celtic music with a contemporary and upbeat flair… It will truly be an interesting night of music and dancing.

I was Totally Destroying It & The Baker Family (Acoustic / Indie)

We are in for a treat! Local Indie Rockers – I was Totally Destroying It will play an acoustic set – which is a rare treat given their masterful instrumental talents. There is no telling what we will get – but it will most certainly be great! Anyone who has seen them in U2 cover mode or at a prior acoustic set will most certainly be there… The Baker Family balances out the sound with their mellow indie sound that oscillates from Postal Service to Yonder Mtn String Band (albeit with a Texas Hillcountry Flair)….. Able to balance the indie rock sounds of percussion and guitars with the Roots/Country sounds of Steel Guitar, Banjo and Fiddle is proof positive of their range and talent. I am thoroughly impressed with their sound and am most certainly looking forward to their show.

Peter Lamb & The Wolves – North Carolina Museum of Art (Jazz)
Local favorites Peter Lamb and Co. come out to jam on a Friday evening. For those of you missing traditional Lounge Jazz, this is the perfect opportunity to get your fix… Fresh off their new album and their awesome performance on NPR’s “State of Things” these guys are ready to play some great music.

Soul Psychedelique – Amras (Jazz Neo-soul)
At first glance, this band might not be taken seriously – but I strongly suggest a 2nd glance – no, a hard look and listen…. This Raleigh based band is a powerhouse – and most certainly under the radar… Johanna Boberg is a star with a top notch voice… A former teen star who has toured the world with the best of the best, she now makes her home here in the Raleigh area and gives us the opportunity with neu-wave soul/blues/trip hop lounge style – which is pulled off on the back of her amazing vocal talents. Their sound is truly unique for this area – as the sound is a contemporary Seal or Stephane Pompougnac with lots of clubby electro pop within... Catch them for a couple of sets this Friday and be amazed…

Royalty of the Bluegrass world, the Punch Brothers are truly some of the best in the business. They have toured the world over with some of the best in the industry – regardless of genre. True musicians and entertainers, this promises to be one hell of night of music – despite the pricey cover… The Punch Brothers are to Tennessee what Steep Canyon Rangers are to Western Carolina. If you a Bluegrass itch to scratch, this will most certainly do the trick….

Local Folk Favorites, Old Habits will grace the stage at Kings for a night of excellent music. The Thompson brothers (believe that was the name of their original band) possess an excellent level of talent and chemistry and this carries to their sound and stage presence. This is a highly recommended show for anyone who enjoys a folksy Wilco or Avett Brothers…. These guys are some of the best we have in the area region for folk sounds… Be sure to check out their songs Fried Green Tomatoes or The Creek.. The Clay Pigeons will open the evening.

One of the Great finds in the triangle, This Carrboro based band with roots in New York is a true joy with their unique sound. Powerful vocals that are clear and crisp and meshed with solid instrumental musicianship, this is a sound that is like no other here in the area and usually only found in music meccas like New York, Chicago, Montreal or New Orleans. This is a great band and a great opportunity to check out some truly unique music to the Raleigh area.

This was an awesome show and a great set with killer encore... As allways "Land of Nod" was played in full effect and the added touch of the horns really completed their sound on a couple of songs..

Jeanne Jolly - Berkeley Cafe (Americana/Folk)
One of the better female vocalists in the area, Jeanne has a great supporting cast around her and she successfully uses them to create her great sound. The music and her voice compliment each other and as they soothe and cajole you into a peaceful state. This is a great sound for an intimate setting and the Berk can certainly fit this - so grab u a chair and sit down, unwind and listen to some feel-good music. I consider the talent of Jeanne to be that of a country version of Melissa Etheridge. Come on out and hear her belt out "Still cant stop loving you" - It will gives you the chills - it's that good!

The Blue Dogs w/ Old Habits - Lincoln Theatre (Folk/Americana)
One of the hotter up-and-coming bands meets up with the the roots estblishment in this powerhouse show at the Lincoln tonight. Old Habits have refined their should and Craig & co have really turned a corner and are playing some great stuff that is getting great reviews and notice from regional and national publications. Their style of folk/country and their stage presence as easy going really loosen up the crowd and their surperb talent and vocal harmonization back up their easy going swagger. They have really come into their own in the past year and we can expect more original stuff from them in the near future...
The Blue Dogs on the other hand, have been at the pinacle of the regional folk scene and while no easy task, they have kept in vogue with a constant stream of new music as well as changing their existing material in such a way that keeps the crowds coming. These guys are great musicians and great entertainers - as has been proven by their longevity. This is a real treat tonight to have these two bands together and I strongly reccomend that you do not miss it!

Review: Heads on Sticks & Javelin Tear it up on a Thursday

Thursday was a a busy music night and while i thought I had a game plan, i was wrong - as a last minute substitution, The Heads on Sticks show was hyped up and i decided to drop in for the show. I am glad that I did as these guys were AWESOME and they had a great crowd to show up and support them.... Mocking Bird, It Doesnt Matter How & my personal faves: Evelynne & It Doesnt Matter How.... They rocked it - and brought a sound that is lacking in this market... These guys are the perfect openers for groups like Javelin or Future Islands.... Great Show and I look forward to seeing more of them around here in the future....

Immediately upon the end of the Heads on Sticks show I hightailed it over to Kings to catch Javelin - where a packed house got to see javelin at it's finest. All the best selections were played and these guys seem to just be getting better and better in time..... This is clearly a group on the rise and I will look forward to catching them again in the near future... Great show! I highly reccomend catch them when you are in the NYC are - or around the country as they seem to be doing quite a bit of touring...

Hot Damn Blues Band - Hibernian Raleigh (Blues/Roots)
Local musicians sit down for a couple of sets of solid - but entertaining music that is heavily laced in the blues genre but also mixes in some roots/americana and utilizes some good covers to keep the crowd going and interested. This will be a great place to unwind, relax, listen to some solid music and get ready for the weekend.

The Hotwires / Accoustic Manner - Pourhouse (Bluegrass)
Local Banjo guru Hank Smith has two of his bands - The Hotwires & Accoustic Manner playing @ Pourhouse for "Cold Beer & Smoking Grass" - featuring Natty Green's Beers. Hank's been in the music scene since a child - and has served as the banjo mainstay for well known bands such as Barefoot Manner, Smokehouse Brass Band, The Morning After and a few others. His latest two projects are the best that Raleigh has to offer in the Bluegrass Genre. This is a bold statement considering that the Carolinas serve as one of the premier hotbeds in this genre....

Bright Young Things w/ Heads on Sticks - Tir Na Nog (Indie)
Tir Na Nog's "Local Beer, Local Band" serves up some great stuff tonight... Raleigh fave - Bright Young Things will bring their popular Indie Roots Rock to the set tonight. Comfortable, solid - with a little bit of everything, the laid back approach is a winner with their crowd - Good vocals, musicians, and a contemporary yet retro feel to the music makes this band an easy listen and very likeable.... Heads on Sticks is a new group that is finding it's way - but you know, I really like the fact that they are all over the place.... It's tight no matter what they are doing and I really dig the electro component. The band is seasoned - each having been in the Raleigh and Regional music scene and they have got their stuff together with this unique, searching sound.... This promises to be a great show...... Gray Young will also be playing.
**Heads on Sticks will be opening the show @ 10pm - They are opening - despite conflicting reports that they are closing the show.... This gives you time to check these guys out before heading to Kings for arguably the best show of the night....

Javelin - Kings Barcade (ElectroPop)
One of the hottest Eletropop groups on the scene right now, this Brooklyn based Duo has taken the East Coast by storm and has really attracted a great following here in NC as this is their 5th visit to the state (and 3rd to Raleigh) in 4 months. They have played Raleigh Wide Open, Hopscotch, Moog Fest and are back for more with what will likely be a packed house....
These guys lite up a room and energize a crowd like few can do... This was evidenced by their show @ Berkeley during Hopscotch when the carryover energy kept the crowd going through the 1st half of the Future Islands show until those guys could get things going.....
Mixing old school and new school sounds with drum pad percussion - the animated duo gets things going and keeps it up with a mix of numbers that change up tempo and beat - but are contagious and pull in the crowd..... I cant thing of a group that is in this genre that does this any better - but these guys are very similar to "Swimming with Dolphins".....
Local Bands Rain in My Face & Reptar open the night. Rain in My Face is of particular note as they have a great sound that is both up and down tempo... A great lounge feel to their stuff - I look forward to hearing them...

Never Shout Never w/ The Maine - Lincoln Theatre (Indie/Rock) - **SOLD OUT**
Two Heavy-Hitting Indie bands take the stage - NY Based Never Shout Never and The Maine from Phoenix. To start with Never Shout Never, these guys have quickly worked their way into the regional and national picture through an agressive grassroots marketing campaign that targeted Campus Radio. Of course it helps to have good music to back up the marketing - and this meet and exceeds that standard. Blending simplistic guitar, percussion and music with simple but clear and good harmonies and well as catchy songwriting that speak to everyday life - in a simplistic approach. This blend has a contemporary feel to it with light touches of hip-hop - in a melodic way... Overall its very catchy and a great listen - This is highly reccomended.
Not to take anything away from Never shout Never, The Maine takes a different tack, more pop than indie - these guys using hard charging guitars and sing/song vocals that have a mainstream Indie Pop sound that has certainly found favor in it's popularity. "In your Arms" has generated over 1 million hits on their websites - and is currently in the top 100 of indie tunes... Their musical style is reminiscent of The Killers or Snow Patrol. This is going to be a great show - and it is technically SOLD OUT - but it's worth it if you are interested - to get there early and check for extra tickets - there usually allways are... This will be a great show - check it out!

Jason Boland & The Stragglers w/ Corb Lund & the Hurtin Albertans - Berkeley Cafe (Country/Roots/Rock)
One of the Current Stars in the the Texas Country/Western scene, Jason Boland and crew are well-known for their agressive musical style - mixing in rousing covers with their own stuff to get the crowd up - and keeps them up for the entire set. This is one of the better bands on the scene right now - Jason has surrounded himself with excellent talent and his smooth vocals balance out the edge - altogether a great rousing set of texas style country/western...

To contrast this, we have the 7 time Canadian Country artist award winner - Corb Lund & The Hurtin Albertans - their style of soothing, slow-down country/roots are full of balads as well as tales of life and things not gone quite right... They are also able to draw on their celtic roots - as evidenced in their song I want to be in the calvary. This is a classic example of a crossover balad in the Country/Roots/Celtic mix - and it is masterfully done by these guys....

This promises to be a great night of Country/Western - if you have any interest in this style of music - this show is not to be missed!

Brooklyn Based - The Loom was in town for the Troika Music Fest and decided on a last-minute Sunday show @ Kings. Good Call....... After a solid opening set by Carboro band North Elementary, These guys took the stage with authority and played a solid set lasting right around an hour... The crowd was not spectactular but it was 50-60 or so - fairly decent for a Sunday... Great music - drums, horns, and the vocal harmonization was superb....
Excellent Show - look forward to a return trip to the Triangle!

F. O. Finch Quartet - The Mint (Jazz)
Local Jazz group highlighted by F.O. on the sax will chill the upstairs lounge @ The Mint. This is a monthly gig - held the 1st Thursday of each month. You can expect a laid-back crowd and music to match. Traditional lounge jazz doesnt get any better - this is a great place to catch a great set of music and have a cocktail to put an early start on the weekend.
Expect an 8pm start with music lasting until 10:30 or so...

Lubriphonic - Pourhouse (Jazz/Funk)
This Chicago based group have been stalwarts of the Chicago and midwest regional Funk/Soul/Jazz scene for quite some time and have developed a national base that has taken them on several national tours as well as a few international gigs as well. Best known for their horn drenched funk and soul with some superb organ sounds and vocals, this group is able to bring the crowds with their balance of all sounds (with some great guitar and drums on the side). You never know what to expect with these guys as they oscilate from a mellow soul number (such as Speed Dial) To a great upbeat funk spot (such as Hell Down Below). Think of these guys as a polished and professional version of The Pietasters w/ a side of Particle. This most certainly is not a show to be missed if you have any interest in Funk/Soul/Jazz...

This Band hailing out Philadelphia has been a long-time favorite of the Philly area and this has launched them regional and national tours including this tour that is taking to them to RiverHawk/Bear Creek Music Fests in Florida. If you like Yonder Mountain String Band, you will most certainly love this set at the Berk.

As featured on NPR, this New York based band got their start by playing on the street and in subway stations... Their talent opened doors for them and soon their rough,gritty style could be heard in venues around the city and throughout the mid-atlantic. They have been featured on Maverick Magazine, The New Yorker and NPR on multiple occasions.... Their style can be compared to Big Pink and Old Crow Medicine Show. They have a great blend of Dirk's guitar, drum, keys and horns that make this a funky jazz journey into the unknown.... For those of you who enjoy 007 or Astral Project, you will really appreciate this progressive jazz/funk sound. Dirk is no stranger to the scene, he has been in the Chicago/New Orleans jazz circles for years and has been highly regarded by some of the vanguards of the scene - namely Booker T, Santana, Chico Huff & Sam Kiniger among others.... Despite this recognition, Dirk has forged his own way - pushing the envelope of Funk and Jazz variations blending long solos with short energetic bursts of caucophony that is is sweet music to the ears and to the feet.... Hey All!!!

I've had some crazy crazy crazy stuff going on the last couple of weeks so I appologize in being remiss with my postings. I promise I'm gettin back in the saddle - it's beeen crazy stuff trying to almost single handedly organize the music for a festival with 2 main and 1 intermediate stages - 20+ bands and performance slots - plus an afterparty and such.... All I have to say is if day one is any indication, Hopscotch is going to be a smashing success!
All the venues were PACKED. It is simply crazy - make sure you know where you are going because it is really hard to get into and out of the venues.....

Stars of Day 1:

All Tiny Creatures - Amazing... Simply amazing - great material. Crisp, clear, easy to follow and a masterful electronica light... I was very impressed.

Future Islands - Again - Really Really good and they whipped the crowd into a frenzy in no short order... Easily the craziest set of the night....

Collections of Colonies of Bees - Nice light electronica - was not expecting this Electro/New Wave - but great great stuff!

Grand Prize Award Winner: JAVELIN!
These guys ROCKED!!! Talk about a two man army - holy crap! My clothes are still shaking.... It was a sweat drenched, block rockin beat session - havent had one of those in a while!

One of my personal faves - Delta Rae is performing with another very good band - Birds and Arrows.. This is going to be great night at the Berk!
Birds and Arrows is a Chapel Hill based trio that has folk indie sound drenched in the amazing soulful vocals of Andrea Connolly. This is a great relaxing sound that makes for some easy listening - and you can focus on the musicianship (the cello is a very nice touch as well). The music and the vocals seem to complement each other - and Andrea's talented voice reminds you of shades of Indigo Girls or Tift Merritt... This is a great opener for Delta Rae - heck, I would reccomend you seeing them if they we playing solo - they are that good

Delta Rae is a Durham based quartet (by way of California) - the Holjes kids (two brothers and a sister) along with family friend Elizabeth Hopkins, have created a dynamite sound and are truly a vocal powerhouse. Brittany and Elizabeth's vocals are really world-class and their chemistry and talents have you thinking of other close-knit bands like Fleetwood Mac or Mamas & The Papas... This is a HOT band that will be on the big stage one day - its a matter of when - not if....

Soft Company & Houston Bros - Tir Na Nog (Indie/Experimental)
As part of the Local Beer Local Band series, the fine folks at Tir Na Nog have brought us two bands from the Charlotte area.
Houston Bros is of particular interest as they are in the new wave, electronic, indie experimental scene and their brand of music is particularly interested and played with great enthusiasm and skill. It is most certainly an interesting sound and I highly reccomend checking it out if the above show does not grab your interest....
Soft Company is more in the mold of the idie/new age genre - and comes off as bit like an unpolished Bjork - very good - very interesting with crisp, clear sounds.. This style works for this genre and it's quite good... The band has done an excellent job melding the vocals and varios guitar and keayboard music to create a pretty solid - downbeat sound that is easy to listen to - yet complex if you really want to pay attention and concentrate.. Either way its going to be a great show and I'm just disappointed that I cant be in two places at the same time...

Review - Stonehoney and Craig Thompson Plus Peter Lamb & The Wolves

Last night I caught two great shows. Craig Thompson of "Old Habits" did a solo act prior to Austin based Stonehoney... Craig was absolutely amazing on guitar and vocals. He has a stage presence with the talent to back it up. A great quick set for him that was truly amazing.... It was my first time seeing Stonehoney and so I was wondering what I was in for... After a slow start, the band round it's groove and treated us to a powerful set of originals and old Texas hits. These 5 guys - 4 guitarists and a drumer can belt it out in a variety of levels as each one of the guitarists will take over lead vocals depending on song... Their Alt Country Roots Rock sound has a twang of pop dashed in for good effect and you know what? It works.... Very very impressive set and I look forward to having these guys back in Raleigh soon....

The 2nd concert of the night was Peter Lamb & The Wolves... What more can I say about these guys - they are the standard bearer of the Raleigh Traditional Jazz scene... I also must say that Peter is very creative with getting different local musicians involved to come and sit in with the band - giving them a different feel each time... Brilliant and a great bi-monthly gig for them, us the regulars and Raleigh...

The mainstay of the Raleigh Jazz scene, these guys will tear it up tonight at the Humble Pie... Good crowd, Great Music and lots of dancing going on.. All in all, a great evening for relaxing jazz and meeting with friends.

Old Habits & Acoustic Manner - The Brewery (Roots/Folk/Bluegrass)
I'm really glad to see the Brewery branching out a bit and getting some different music in their venue. This is a great place to see music and what better than two of the best folk/bluegrass bands in town... Old Habits has made great strides in establishing itself as one of the best in their class - and they have done it quickly. The Thompson Brothers have put together a great set of musicians and they seem to get better every time out. It's an exciting band, great music and a great mix of original songs and some great covers that they seem to put their own stamp on.

Acoustic Manner is the former Barefoot Manner group (-1) and they are playing their brand of Bluegrass with the same fervor as before.... This will most certainly be a great show - so come on out and check out a great night of music...

**Hot**The Civil Wars - Pourhouse (Indie/Roots)
Perhaps the most intriguing band of the night - The Civil Wars - treats Raleigh to a stop. Claims to fame for these two include a recent stint of their music on Greys Anatomy. Their music style is a powerful, powerful duet of great voices - and it will blow you away. Think Glen Hansard & MarketaIrglova - it's that good! They have a whole bunch of great songs - but if you only have time to listen to one, Poison & Wine is the one - its a champion - and now is a great time to catch them while they are under the radar...
Madi Diaz opens the evening and she is a talented vocalist in her own right - what a great night of music!

Zorch is an Austin band that is like a hopped up Particle. Very creative and I like their energy and different sounds/vocal styles in putting together their sound... Very interesting and certainly worth a listen on a Wednesday night. Check out their song "Zut Alors" - its exactly what I'm talking about - unique sound and altogether a solid night of music.

Whats most impressive about this Raleigh band is that sometimes when listening to them, it's like closing my eyes and listening to Eddie Vetter - great stuff and its a great sound and i really like how the instrumentation complements the wonderful vocals - a great example of this is "Greetings from Munich" - wonderful and powerful..... Psuedo Blue & the Majestics open the show around 10. Expect Whiskey kills to be on around 11:30 or so....

Zach Deputy w/ Big Daddy Love - Pourhouse (reggae/roots/bluegrass)
To say that you can Zach's music fits neatly into a certain genre or types of genres is not doing his music justice. He has the unique ability to blend elements of reggae, funk, roots and rock all together to create a pretty fun sound that will get you grooving and eventually, dancing... His music is fun, and it is very good. I liken his sound to a mashup of The Wailers, Galactic and maybe the Dynamites..... It is a great sound and certainly not something to be missed "Tubesteak Remix" says it all......
Big Daddy Love out of Asheville opens the evening and they represent a sharp contrast to Zach. Their Roots/Bluegrass style of music most certainly has an Asheville slant to it and it works - its great, clear and easy to listen to and dance if it strikes your fancy... These guys are really good and it's certainly worth getting over a little early to catch their entire set.
As an added benefit, Lonerider brewing is doing a beer tasting at 8pm. The opening band will start around 9....

Streetlight Manifesto - Lincoln Theatre (Punk/Ska)
The evening just got cranked up a few notches with this band. These guys are in the midst of a North American/European tour and certainly seem to be going place. This band represents a type of music that is not as popular as it once was - but it's great stuff and certainly worth a listen. I liken this band to a cross between the Pietasters and Flogging Molly. It will certainly get the crowd jacked up and ready to get rocking and rolling.... I wish I could be two places at one time - but it's simply not possible.... I highly reccomend this show - as it's great stuff - and who knows - maybe I'll try to make both.... The Wonder Years will take the stage around 8-8:30 - so this is a relatively early show...

They have a great sound that is guitar, drums and horns - all blended with some damn good vocals and a touch of retro that makes it chic.... This is a unique sound and I certainly encourage you check this out if you are in the mood for something new and very, very good...

A friend notified me that these guys are playing - great stuff and certainly filling a void in this area of Flamenco music.... They have a great sound and Ed Stephenson - a Raleigh transplant from Toronto, is a guitar player with National Acclaim.... If you have a hankering for Flamenco - this IS the place where you will find it this weekend. **Hot**The Waybacks - Berkeley Cafe (Roots Rock)
I dont know how Marianne got this booked - but she hit a Grand Slam with this San Francisco band. These guys are one of the hottest Roots Rock bands on the scene right now... With the polish and poise of a big-time band - yet with the enthusiasm and aura of a up and coming band - it's the perfect mix of attidude and edge that will make this concert one to remember. Take a listen to "Railroad Blues" and you will know exactly what I mean... The Vocals, the guitar solo's, fiddle, mandolin - the whole package... Great Stuff, Great band - and this is most certainly a Grand Slam of a show and a MUST SEE. Doors at 8 - show at 9 - Get there early if you want a good spot because this place will be packed!

The Heavy Hitters of the evening, Raleigh Band - and national/international celebrities, they are here for an evening of simply amazing music that will move and inspire all to sit or stand still and listen.... It's our good fortune that these busy ladies are able to get together for a real treat for us... This show is not to be missed!! The world has it's three tenors, Raleigh has the 3 Queens in Lynn, Caitlin and Tonya... These ladies are Royalty - and have National and International acclaim with Tres Chicas and with their respective own projects and previous groups.....
Their vocals and they way the harmonize and blend is simply amazing - just take a listen to "Slip so Easy" and you will know what I'm talking about.... This is great stuff!

This Tour kicks off tonight in Downtown Raleigh:

The 2010 Honda Civic Tour Kicks off at the Raleigh Downtown Amphitheater. The tour features Paramore, Tegan and Sarah, New Found Glory, and the rising pop-rock group creating a lot of Buzz: Kadawatha.
This is the first major U.S. tour for the indepedent pop-rock band based out of Sri Lanka. Kadawatha is a really awesome, talented group of guys with musicial sounds that are compared to The Hush Sound & Switchfoot. This is a show that is not to miss!

Holy Ghost Tent Revival - Backyard Bistro (Indie/Ska)
Our friends from Greensboro are back to rock the heck out of the Backyard Bistro - the former Damons location - right across the street from the RBC Centre. Expect another solid night of guitar, drums, vocals and horns - this is not a show to miss.... This going to be a great show that will build into a crescendo of music dancing and craziness. This is truly an up and coming band and it's only a matter of time given the level of talent and dedication in these guys....

Who's Bad - Fosters @ Cameron Village (Michael Jackson covers)
Ok - Ok, make fun... But this is one of the outdoor shows that Fosters puts on every so often.... This Harkens back to the Live after Five Days - so come out and enjoy a little bit of music on your way to dinner or another show... Admission is $10 - which is entirely inappropriate but if you have a itch for Michael Jackson - it will likely be worth it... - This show has a start time of 9 - but my guess is 8pm is probably more in line...

Midtown Dickens - Tir Na Nog (Folk/Indie/Bluegrass)
This Durham based band is playing as part of the Local Beer Local Band series - they have an eclectic and interesting sound that ranges from Folksy/Bluegrass to a harder driving indie/garage sound - and peppered with rangey vocals and Horns!.... Catherines vocals are crisp, clear and hit all the high notes in impressive fashion. I am most impress with their range of instrumentation - they each have like 5-6 things that they will play during the course of the show - and it adds to the sound and it's very interesting It's a really great sound and I am looking forward to hearing their set as I am sure it is going to be a good one.

Soja - Lincoln Theatre (Reggae)
Old School Reggae band from the DC area..... These guys have been tearing it up for longer than I can remember.... They are Reggae music royalty and are in the midst of an East Coast Tour.... Raleigh is fortunate to have these guys - if you like Reggae at all, this show is a MUST. Come listen to some of the best Reggae out on the scene right now.... Great Songs, great sound and most certainly a great crowd.... Looking forward to seeing these guys tonight!
The Movement & Mambo Sauce are the opening acts - expect them to start around 8pm with Soja taking the stage around 10-10:30.....

Lonnie Walker & Free Electric State - Berkeley Cafe (Indie Rock)
I'm not sure what much else I can say about these local Rockers.... Lonnie Walker is one of the most talented guys that I have met - he's got the whole package and brings a level of energy and excitement to the stage on each show that is unparalleled. His brand of rock is solid Indie - with driving beats that are easy to jam to and that, coupled with his energy and stage presence, gets the crowd jacked up to a whole new level.... Free Electric State is a great indie band that has this retro-psychedelic edge to them.. This makes their sound rather unique for the area and it is catchy and something a little different... It also helps to be good musicians - which these guys are - and their sound is blended and polished - yet edgy at the same time... Should be a great night of music at the Berk!

Murphys Kids - Pourhouse (Ska/Reggae)
This Richmond based band has a great sound with the combination of Reggae & Ska. They remind me very much of The Pietasters with their sound and style. Their Hi-energy enthusiasm is contagious to the crowd and if prodded, they will take you on a trip of music utopia... They have an amazing knack of blending the instrumentation and the vocals to create just the right sound at just the right tempo for thier songs... "I still miss you" & "Anticorporate Beach Party" are two excellent examples of this and I'm sure there will be many, many more tonight. Come on out, check it out as this is just a taster for tomorrow's show at Lincoln theatre.....
Parachute Musical and Sequioa Prep get the evening kicked off around 10... Expect the headliner to take the stage around 11:30-midnite....

Old Habits & The Preservation - Pourhouse (Folk/Bluegrass - Country/Rock)
Local Favorite Old Habits take the stage at the Pourhouse for a Tuesday show - Anchored by the Thompson Brothers, this band has quickly gained popularity and has quite a local following (as evidenced by their show 2 weeks ago at Seaboard Station). Thy harmonize, blend sound well and are great entertainers with great stage presence.... Check out "Midnight Moonlight" - and you will see what I mean... This is a great band and it is guaranteed to be a great show....
The Preservation hails from Austin and fits the Garage Country/Rock set.... I like to think of it as dancehall band - great stuff and something that we certainly do not get to enjoy very often here in Raleigh... Their musical styles range from country, to roots to garage rock - but somehow, the band is able to show it's range with excellent transition that is seamless - yet distinct. Check out the range in the songs between "Nickeled and Dimed" to "Tears me Up" to "Little Lucy". This is great stuff and it promises to be a great show.
The Pourhouse has this set for an 8pm show - I highly doubt anything starting before 9 - but get there at 8 just to be safe....

JJ Grey & Mofro w/ Amelia's Mechanics - Pourhouse (Funk/Indie)
JJ Grey & Mofro is one of the better funk/southern rock groups out there.... Based in Jacksonville, FL - these guys are in the midst of a national tour and Raleigh is fortunate to have them for a Sunday show.... Blending styles of Blues,Funk and Southern Rock, they seem to create a sound that takes the best of all for a sound that gets you going. Sounds like "Orange Blossoms" are widely played on mainstream radio and these guys are even better live... These guys remind me a lot of the Early Galactic or Radiators. It is really, really, great stuff - and you just gotta love the horns for the Funk sound....
As an added treat, Greensboro based Amelia's Mechanics are opening this great show... Their brand of Indie Rock/Folk Fusion is great and I've said this before - their vocal styles are a mix of Indigo Girls & Bjork. There are still tickets avail - doors open at 7 and the show starts at 8.... This will be a great night of music - get ready!

Review - New King Rippers

Saturday night's concert @ Sadlacks was one of the best dixieland jazz concerts that I've seen outside of New Orleans in a VERY long time.... These guys are simply amazing - and it's good to see the band back together again - albeit with a few new members - it fills a gaping hole in the Raleigh music scene.... Dave Wright, simply amazing - great vocals w/French & English and awesome Trombone to boot.... Dave Andrews is the string maestro - and makes it happen, Greg Cabel is belting it out on the Trumpets, I'm not sure what I can say about Bob Nery on the reeds - except AWESOME - raleigh's version of Pete Fountain for sure! Carl Blackwell, well he is the man on the skins - and not too bad on vocals either... Eric Husel is likely one of two Sousaphone players in the area - which gives the band a brassy bass - and simply solidifies their status a Dixieland Jazz royalty in the Triangle....

New King Rippers - Sadlacks (New Orleans Jazz)
This raleigh-based powerhouse sextet is anchored by ex Squirrel Nut Zippers Trombone/Vocals - David Wright as well as a great supporting cast which includes Carl Blackwell of Funkuponya. This is a HOT band!!! It certainly is not one to miss. The action starts early - 7:30 with the show ending around 10pm or so. Get your dancing shoes as this band playes New Orleans inspired Jazz from the likes of, jelly roll morton, louis armstrong and bends the genres of jazz/funk/gospel/calypso/swing to create a great sound that is upbeat, danceable and most certainly enjoyable.... Get there early, have a sandwich, and then have a few drinks and enjoy the evening....

Government Mule - Downtown Raleigh Amphitheatre
Warren Haynes and group is back after a 3 year hiatus but is ready to rock out downtown Raleigh.... Originally from New York - New Orleans is the adopted home of this great band... While they forge their own path - I liken their sound very much to that of The Subdudes. It's going to be a great nite for music and I would not be surprised to see Warren out on the town afterwards. This is going be a great show - be sure to get you tickets in advance...

Government Mule has two "afterpartys" that are worth mentioning:

George McConnell & the Nonchalants w/Kenebec - Pourhouse
and
Waterwood Down w/ 5 Gallon Pale - Berkeley Cafe
both are fairly good rock/jam bands and should keep the crowd rocking for the remainder of the night.... George McConnell and group hails from Oxford, MS and blends in elements of Southern Rock into their sound - as well as some great guitar riffs... They are pure entertainers and local band, Kenebec will be opening for them at the pourhouse around 10:30 - expect George and co to take the stage around midnite......
Waterwood Down is a local Raleigh band that sounds more like if combined Govt Mule and Widespread Panic... Its a great sound and certainly worth a listen to. It's a laid-back jam session that blends elements of Blues, Rock, Funk and Folk.... It's a great sound and I'm looking forward to the show... Another good local band opens for these guys - 5 Gallon Pale... Expect the show to kick off around 10...

Hot Damn Blues Band - Music on the Porch @ Seaboard Station (Blues/Jam)
Local faves, these guys come to jam out the weekly gathering of a few hundred people. It's a great way to wind down Friday happy hour - or get the family out for an evening of cheap entertainment (it's a free show - but donations are accepted) - and a great venue for families....
The Band Starts Playing at 7 and will likely play until about 9:30.... $3 Beer, $4 Wine and $2 slices of pizza - or you can order food from Peace China Resturant - or, bring your own dinner - picnic style....

Adrian Duke Trio - Hibernian Raleigh (Blues/Funk/Jazz)
This local jazz has been nothing short of surprising in their climb up the music ladder. Adrian Duke has assembled a powerhouse trio that blurs the lines of Funk/Jazz & Blues for a sound that is drenched in the style of an upbeat New Orleans Jazz club..... It is simply amazing and has attracted fans far and wide as evidenced by their performance for Queen Elizabeth during her last state visit...
This is a great opportunity to catch a great gig of music on a Thursday... Get there early - as I expect the Hibernian room will be PACKED.... Be sure to check them out on their website below:

The Rockridge Brothers - Berkeley Cafe (Euro Style Bluegrass)
This is certainly an interesting band - a Swedish punk rock band - discovered the Bluegrass music of Appalachian region and set about converting themselves into a world class Bluegrass band. The have most certainly succeeded and now play to packed venues throughout Europe - as well as a good solid following here in the US. Their sound is genuine - with hints of Scotch-Irish folk and lilt thrown in for good measure.... It most certainly piques the interest, esp after hearing about the background of these guys - but trust me, they are VERY good and come out ready to dance, clog, hoe down... whatever suits you....
The Lynda Dawson (of local band Kickin Grass)trio will start things off around 8-8:30 or so and expect these guys to take the stage sometime after 10....

Scholars Word - Pourhouse (Reggae)
This Florida based band comes to the Pourhouse while in the midst of an East Coast Tour. They play a version of Reggae that some may characterize as Ska. Their musical stylings are very similar to The Pietasters - except with a lot better vocals.... This is an interesting listen and very,very good for those of you who need a Reggae fix... Good stuff, solid and this band has the talent to pull the instrumentation and vocals together which is not allways the case with Reggae...

Nuclear Power Pants w/ The Ts - Berkeley Cafe (Americana/Rock/Indie)
This band splits it's time between Baltimore and Providence and is in the middle of a mini east coast swing.... This is an interesting mix of Americana and indie pop with the electro elements as well as the instruments and the retro sounding vocals. All in all a very interesting sound and certainly worth a listening to. I'm intrigued as their one avail song is very well put together - despite the fact that they try to give the appearance of otherwise... It's very very good. I'm certainly looking forward to this show.... As an Added Bonus, Raleigh faves, The Ts will be opening for these guys and will rock out the stage and warm up the crowd palying their brand of local indie rock... All in all two great bands - gonna be a great night!

**Hot** StephaniesID - Pourhouse (Indie Alt Rock)
If you only catch one show this week - and Alt/Indie is your thing, you MUST catch this show... Through a twist of fate, the original booking cancelled and Asheville-based Stephanie Morgan and krewe were able to slide into this spot - and things could not have worked out better. This woman has some POWERFUL vocals, excellent songwrting skills to match and a great supporting band that supports and complements the main feature - her wonderful vocals. This is a complex band that blends elements of Indie, pop and experimental music into one, great sound - I liken her voice to that of Nathalie Merchant and/or Bjork - if they were in the same genre.. Their songs "Cold Cold", "Mission from God" "Bullet Train" & "Unmistakenly Love" - are red-hot and most certainly to be crowd favorites this evening.... I cant say enough about this band and her amazing vocals, - a true gem and Raleigh is very fortunate to have this show this evening - come out and support this band as well as solid opening acts: Cosmic Ray Liotta, Boathouse Allstars & Jar-E. Opening acts start around 9ish and expect Steph and Group to take the stage sometime after 11....

Perpetual Groove - Lincoln Theatre (Indie/Jam)
Raleigh favorite Perpetual Groove comes back for another show and allows us Perpetual Groove Fans to gorge once again on a most excellent feast of Indie/Jam. This band needs no further introductions - it's in the hipster mainstream - expect a packed house - I'd be there myself - but Stephanie is in town...

Raleigh's own Jazz All-Star Quintet take the stage for the bi-monthly gig @ Humble Pie. Great Jazz tunes pulling from the influences of the Jazz Greats, New Orleans, Dixieland, as well as Gyspy, European Folk and Russian influences... For those of you not able to make it up to Montreal this week for their annual superstar Jazz Fest, not to worry, this will do just fine... Add to the great music, the venue is simply amazing for the relaxed setting and the superb beverages. Come by and check it out - 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month - a simply wonderful evening of music and drink....

The Debonzo Brothers - Pourhouse (Indie Rock)
This Raleigh band brings it's brand of indie rock to the Pourhouse for a wonderful evening. They have a smooth, yet retro sound that is reminicent of The Psychedelic Furs - (with their song "Boom Box" and then switches gears with a sound more along the lines of more contemporary Indie with the Song "21" - one thing is a constant, quality sound with the vocals and ocassional driving guitar riffs. It's great, catchy and certainly worth a listen. Elonzo & Jack the Radio open the evening around 10 and expect the headliners to take the stage around 11:30.

Don Rigsby & Jess Klein - Berkeley Cafe (Bluegrass/Roots)
Nashville based Don Rigsby is one of the best out there that combines elements of Bluegrass/Country and Gospel. His vocals, picking and supporting band are second to none and he has international acclaim is a 2 time grammy nominee and awad winner. He blends gospel songs into the Bluegrass/Country genre with an ease and expertise that is enjoyable for all and is simply masterful in his vein of music.

The Mantras - Pourhouse (Rock/Psychedelic Fusion)
This Greensboro based band brings a unique blend of rock and psychedelic music fused together with rare instrumentation and driving riffs. This is being billed as the O'Phishal afterparty and I cant think of a better local band to fit the bill. Expect a great crowd and a great show as these guys feed off the crowd - a jacked up crowd only raises the bar for an most excellent effort and performance.....
I really like these guys - they remind me a lot of another jam band in the same vein: Particle - hi-energy, great driving beats and music that is all over the place. These guys very have a great diverse sound that ranges from chill rock to explosive psychedelic pulsation... And it is all great!

Caltrop - Slims (Indie Rock)
Chapel Hill based Caltrop promises to tear up Slims on a Thursday. While cast in the Indie genre, what they do is test the limits of themselves and the music - what you get is what I would label experimental Rock - and leave it at that. The great thing about this is that each rendition of each song may be a little different with a little more attitude, guitars, drums or extra solos... It's all good and this promises to be a very good and entertaining show.

They are extremely talented on the fiddle, steel pedal guitar and vocals make for a great night of Honky Tonk..... There music is cut from the same vein as another great Austin band: The Derailers
Local band Hearts and Daggers open up the show around 10 - expect Lucky Tubb to take the stage around 11-11:30....

This California based band is in the midst of a national tour and brings their indie rock sound to the Cats Cradle tonight. Their newest Album: Beggars, their 7th, is officially on sale now... Their music stylings is driving guitars and vocals in a style reminicent of Muse or The Ruse. It's hard driving music that gets you going and they have a way to tie the energy of the guitars and vocals together to create some great stuff. This is most definitely worth checking out - despite the drive to Chapel Hill... Expect a 7pm start to the show with 3 opening bands: Kevin Devine, Bad Veins & The Dig - given the three bands - a 10-10:30 start is most likely.

Frontier Ruckus & Samantha Crain - Berkeley Cafe (Folk Rock/Indie Soul)
Frontier Ruckus, a Michigan based band who is on a east cost tour bring a Folk Rock sound that has elements of bluegrass, country and americana. They have a multitude of instruments, sounds, and ranges that can at times sound confusing, but they songs have a way to tie all elements together quite nicely. The songs can sound rousing or can be a mournful ballad telling tales of working class life, lost love, ect. This is most certainly worth checking out and you will not be disappointed if you enjoy raw, folk rock.

Samantha Crain brings her melodiic voice to grace our presence all the way from Oklahoma. She has a powerful voice, poweverful lyrics and will impress you with her ability to blow your ears back with the raw power of her voice to the next song where her gentle voice can lull and comfort you. She has the range and depth of Bjork and it is most certainly impressive. This is the perfect nitecap to the opening performance of Frontier Ruckus.

Hillbilly Hellcats - Slims (Rockabilly/Psychobilly)
This Colorado based band brings a brand of Rockabilly that is more reserved for the Texas scene. Taking a page from Dale Watson, this band blends elements of rock,folk and country to create an awesome sound and a great night of music. Their songs are entertaining but also full of wonderful insights and are very entertaining. Mixing their original songs with a couple of covers, this band will most certainly keep the crowd rocking, rolling and dancing... This promises to be a very entertaining night of music... Come on out and support this great band and great venue....

Mary Gauthier - Berkeley Cafe (Folk Rock/Country)
Based in Nashville by way of New Orleans, Boston, and places in between, Mary Gauthier(pronounced Go Shay) brings a level of talent to this endeavor that is classic overachiever and typical of her past conquests. Her music is part story, part real life and sung and played with a passion of a person who "has lived it" - and that in itself is entertaining. Mary's ballads are played with talent, emotion, a persona that makes you believe.... Now on to the music.... Mary has a great songwriting talent (which rocketed her to the top of the New York Times lists) and her guitar and vocals are just as good. This is a show definitely worth checking out - even with the steep ticket price ($20! - we're talking NYC prices here) - but still, it will be $20 well-spent.....

Based in Durham, Anna has only been playing guitar for a couple of years and only performing in front of people for about 4-5 months... Given the short amount time spend on this endeavor, the results are simply amazing, not only is her music very good, it has the polish as though she has been doing this for over 10 years... She is also a VERY talented songwriter and plays almost all of her own material.... Very very good and certainly worth a listen - as an added incentive, this is a FREE show - so now there is no reason why you shouldnt come out and support this rising star.... Valley Young opens the set around 9 or so and expect Anna to start 10-10:30....

Aslyn & Toby Lightman - Berkeley Cafe (Indie / Vocals / Folk)
Aslyn is a like a breath of fresh air - a simply amazing vocalist, she has an excellent supporting band that blends elements of guitar, strings and percusion to make a great sound. Simple, yet deep and rich, this is an amazing soothing sound. Certainly worth a listen and as an added treat, Toby Lightman brings her sound to the stage following Aslyn. Hailing from New York City, she is NYC's answer to Joss Stone. The vocal similarities are uncanny and she really is has a range that very few do.... Toby is on the way to doing some great things in the music world.... Blending songs between mellow balads and upbeat, feel-good, this is most certainly a show to catch....
This is an early show - expect Aslyn to start right @ 8pm - Toby Lightman will likely start around 9 or so and you will be home by 11!.....

This should be a great night of music as Of Montreal has mastered the inclusion of ska into their indie music - the excellent musicianship as well as the GREAT vocal remind me of an upbeat Postal Service....

Anna is one of our hidden gems that is soon to no longer be a secret. Based in Durham, she played her 1st concert in Feb and has very quietly been putting together a great set of music. Her Folk/acoustic style is simply amazing, soothing and moving. It is simply amazing that she has only been playing for a little over a year and actualy performing for around 3 months....
She is truly a pleasant surprise and a very good reason to check out her so on a Monday night.
Her vocal style is a bit like Natalie Merchant and her range is broad, and clear.

Review - Funkuponya and Mosiac Spring Music Fest

The Mosiac Music Festival held twice a year is a true gem for this area as it offers some best of the best of our local electronic music scene as well as some of the better regional and national performers. I was very, very impressed with the turnout on the nights I was able to attend (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Sun) - great music, great crowd and a great way to support our diverse local music scene.
As a way to bring the fest to a close - Funkuponya played an opening act for Neu Romance - the creation of Chico Scott - and one of the standard bearers of the Electronic Music scene. Neu Romance kept the electonic music scene going in Raleigh through the dark days and now is one of the more respected names in town.... Chico has been able to get the best of the best to come out to the weekly gigs for those of us who need an electronica fix.... Thankfully, the mosiac is the new venue for this event as the Albi bar closed down - as it will be recreated into the new Kings facility....
Funkuponya is a collection of some great musicians - each with different backgrounds - they have been really working hard on their sound and are near perfection - with Brian tearing up the keys, Leo on the bass, Carl on drums and Doug on guitar - this band has found it's way bringing Raleigh with, solid Funk - and it is exactly what was needed. I look for this band to continue their hard work and hopefully add some horns but they are a great band and they are testament to the developing music scene...

Small Ponds - Pourhouse (Folk/Rock)
This is the latest gem from Caitlin Cary - and what a Gem it is. Her duo with Matt Douglas is simply masterful and makes for some great easy listening. There vocal blend together in a "tug at your heart strings" sort of way. Just take a listen to "bleeding heart" and you will know what I mean. This draws strong compariasons to Glenn Hansard - it is that good....
This will be a great show - Luego & BJ Barnham will open the evening expect Caitlin and Matt to take the stage around 10-10:30

Let's continue the party from the throwdown last night at Mosaic at the Berkeley with Goldfinger, Fig, FM, Kino, Shallin Nicole and many more.... This will be a bumpin night of hi-energy dance...

Johnny Folsom 4 - Sadlacks (Rockabilly/Johnny Cash Tribute)
Local rockers Johnny Folsom 4 bring their talents to honor one of the great ones - Johnny Cash - this evening at Sadlacks. Expect a 7pm start or so - and expect a packed house - so get there early if you want a place at a table or along the wall.....

Zydecopious - Seaboard Station's Music on the Porch Series (Zydeco)
Kenny Shore's Zydeco band is back at it - making great music and making people dance. Tonite will be no exception at Seaboard. This is a Family Friendly event with a place for the kids to play while the Adults enjoy the music. Expect a 7pm start for this band.

Ethnographers - Deep South (Indie Rock)
This Greenville based band is the latest in a long string of solid local indie rockers - but this band has an added piece of the puzzle that allows them to stand alone - Megan & Danielle - vocalists that really give this band it's soul and it's distinctive sound - it's masterful.... As an added component - they have the ability to move into the postal service/death cab sound on their slower songs - and it's great.... I highly reccomend this show and the opening band Down by Five.

Glossary - Berkeley Cafe (Southern Rock)
This Murfeesboro, TN band has been quietly making noise and is in the middle of a regional tour of the Southeast.... They bring a style of Southern Rock with rockabilly overtones - the great thing is that they are excellent vocalists and they also have the ability to change their sound and tempo which makes their sets interesting and enjoyable. This is a great mid-week show to catch. This is also an early show - expect opening band: Come on Go with Us to start around 8:15-30 and Glossary to start just before 10 or so....

We had some great music last week and while I was unable to post about all of it, I hope you were able to get out and enjoy it....
Notable shows were I was totaly destroying it's Friday show at Tir na nog..... Awesome job - and great show.....

Artsplosure was yet again a wonderful treat of great local, regional and national music.... This has got to be the best Free music Festival in the Triangle and this year was once again, no disappointment....
The Heavy Hitters on Saturday - The Iguanas of New Orleans & Karl Denison's Tiny Universe (adopted home of New Orleans) - put on two great sets of music.
The iguanas style of latin rock infused with blues/folk/funk elements have been a mainstay in the New Orleans and National music scene for the better part of two decades. They were have given rise to similar bands out of this area - most notably - Los Lonely Boys.
Karl Denison - what more can I say about him after that show? It was truly masteful - a great display of musicianship, and a hi-energy vibe that had the entire crowd dancing - the crowd exploded with the start of the show and the park was fairly full - just to see these guys - it was a great time...
Sunday saw Mel Melton and Charlie Musselwhite - both great shows except that the rain cut short Charlie's show - but all great hi-quality music....

Amelia's Mechanics - Pourhouse (Bluegrass/Folk)
I find this all-women band from Greensboro to be very talented and they have more than filled the void left by the departure of "sweet bye & bye". Take a listen to "Moonshine Driving" and you would think that the Indigo Girls are singing.... The vocals range from that to something on par with Bjork - take a listen to "French Press" and you will certainly agree. These ladies are for real and certainly worth a listen...
Expect Daryl Hance to get things started around 9-9:30 with the ladies taking the stage around 10:30...

OK Go! - Lincoln Theatre (Indie Rock)
Indie Rock Heavyweights OK Go - light up Raleigh while on their national tour that is mostly sold out. These guys are White Hot in the indie music scene and it is a real treat that Raleigh can host this show (courtesy of the Cats Cradle). Their music style is simplistic - with rock/alt guitar, vocals and light electro keys. Its a great sound and hugely popular with over 1 million hits on their top 3 songs.... Check these guys out - it's great stuff and certainly will be a packed out show...

Nova Stella - Pourhouse (Funk/Folk Rock)
This Greeville based band has been a pleasant surprise. In their 18 months of existance - they have not only defined their sound, but have been able to successfully get the masses to buy into their unique stylings. Self described as a "Funk Band that Ate a Folk Singer" - and their ecclectic sound does lend itself to this but also it is more than that - it's great music that can stretch from funk to alt rock - blended in with some great vocals.... This is certainly a unique sound - but it is very good and certainly worth a listen.
Oatmeal Conspiracy & Pacifico open the evening - both are fine bands and will bring some Indie Pop/Jazz to warm you up. Expect a 9pm start with Nova Stella coming on around 11.

Funkuponya - Berkeley Cafe (Funk/Jam)
It's time to get your Funk fix and this Raleigh band will do just that..... These guys are THE funk band in town and will be playing with familiar running mates Hot Politics. This should be a GREAT show to shake it, or just enjoy the music. With Leo on Bass, Brian on Keys, Carl on Drums and Carl on guitar - make an sound that is a mix between john gros (thanks Brian) and Johnny Sketch.... The only thing this band needs is some Horns!!! Thankfully Hot Politics is there and will lend a hand in that dept....
This band has a great sound, each show gets better and better and I'm glad to see them out there with more and more bookings and exposure...

Steep Canyon Rangers - Cats Cradle (Bluegrass)
The best Bluegrass in the State and one the best in the country throw down on Saturday in Chapel Hill.... This is a must see for those of you jonesin for a Bluegrass fix... See my earlier post on them in Feb - awesome stuff and not to be missed.

The Mantras - Pourhouse (Psychedelic/Rock Fusion)
Take a journey with this Greensboro based band as they set out on an evening excursion of music that ranges from psychedelic trance to jam rock to electro funk rock..... All and all, a great evening of a wide spectrum of music all tied together with one band. This band has been setting the local Phish standard - and they seem to be getting better and better. They certainly have the range of great jam bands like Particle and this is a show that is highly reccomended.

Megafaun - Cats Cradle (Folk)
Raleigh folk favorites holding forth over in Chapel Hill for a Friday gig. No strangers to the Raleigh scene, it's going to be the last time to catch them in the area for a while as they are embarking on a national tour that will keep them away until at least July. Joe, Brad & Phil keep getting better and better and each new show brings a new twist - all good and certainly worth catching in order to get your Megafaun fix for the Summer....

Bio Ritmo w/ Umoja Orchestra - Pourhouse (Salsa)
This Ponce, Puerto Rico band is world-renowned in salsa, carribean beat, and dance. This is a real treat to have them at the Pourhouse and it should be a packed crowd as it coincides with "Salsa night" at a downtown Raleigh establishment. This group is considered one of the founders reviving the new "old school" Salsa Movement - or "Salsa Classica". Their full entourage of instruments and vocals is the total package and this music is not commonly found in the U.S. outside of select cities like Miami or New York. This is certainly a must-see for those of you with any interest in Salsa / Carribean Beat.

Holy Ghost Tent Revival - Local 506 (Indie/Punk/Ska)
Our Friends - Greensboro based Holy Ghost Tent Revival is out again (check listing from 4/8/10) - this time at Chapel Hill's Local 506. Expect another night of guitar,vocal,drums and horns..... This is going to be a great night that will build into a crescendo music,dancing and craziness. This is truly an up and coming band - and it's only a matter of time given the talent and energy of these guys....

Schooner - Tir Na nog (Indie)
Yet another installment of the WKNC sponsored "Local Beer, Local Band" night, Carboro based Schooner comes to town to play it's version of Indie Rock. This is a mellow, easy-going music that flows easy - but is damn good... The vocals range from a refined Chris Isaak to a deranged Sting.... The admirable thing about this is that the band is able to artfully make it flow all together for our listening enjoyment.... I've seen these guys several times over the past few years and it is allways a pretty good show - check it out - there will be a good crowd.

Delta Rae, Big Fat Gap, Wylie Hunter - Deep South (Folk/Bluegrass/Blues)
This is a show NOT to be missed!

Delta Rae is quite possibly one of the best bands "under the radar" from this area in a long, long time. Their vocals are simply amazing - Brittany Holljes has got to be one of the best new female vocalists on the scene. The rest of the band - consisting of three siblings Ian, Eric & Brittany as well as Elizabeth Hopkins and James Goldberg - together their harmonization and masterful use of keys, strings and percussion to supplement the vocals is beyond words - its a religious experiance..... The talent level of this band far surpasses most bands - and they seem light years ahead of development - they have only been a band for not quite a year and already they have the seasoned sound and harmonization that takes others years to master. The music scene has not seen the level of vocal talent in this band since Fleetwood Mac... I highly reccomend this show to anyone and everyone - its your chance to see a true up and comer perform in the beginning stages of what should be a great career.

Big Fat Gap & Wylie Hunter will follow and will bring their brand of Bluegrass and Americana/Blues. Big Fat Gap is a Bluegrass mainstay that makes our Bluegrass music scene one of the best in the land.... They are frequent visitors to the various music venues around the area and they will most certainly put on a great show... I like Wylie Hunter's musical style - it's similar to David Gray with a touch of Ben Folds and he brings an energy that is certainly contagious and hey, if your gonna stay for two shows, catch the 3rd one as well....
