Music Picks for Sunday, Feb 28th

Cool Kid Collective & Paper Pilot - Berkeley Cafe (rock / neu age)
Afton presents these two solid Neu Rock groups - and both are an alternative to the hard-charging rock styles that more main stream rock bands. These guys walk the fine line between Rock and Indie - hence the Neu Rock label.... This should be two solid sets of a unique sound and it is definitely worth checking out....
Check them out at: www.myspace.com/paperpilotband www.myspace.com/coolkidcollective

Benefit Concert Featuring N.E.D. & The Proclivities @ Lincoln Theatre (rock)
N.E.D. (no evidence of disease) are Six Gynecological Oncologists who happen to also moonlight as a very good rock band. This is the 2nd night of a benefit for the NC Chapter Gyn Cancer (1st night was @ the Cradle). Raleigh's own, The Proclivities open the set. This is a good set of music - for a good cause - come on out and support this fundraiser..

Review - The Jackets & Small Ponds - Tir Na Nog - Thursday, Feb 25

All,

I was on my way to Bumble - the weekly set of SOLID electronica @ Busy Bee when I ran into some friends at the Remedy and a few Pimms/Tonics later, I was persuaded to go to catch these bands at Tir Na Nog instead. I am glad that I did.... The Jackets are SOLID - great set - short - but very, very good folk rock... Small Ponds were even more impressive - as soon as I saw Caitlin Cary, I knew this would be good. Small Ponds is the latest endeavor for one of the founders of the legendary Whiskeytown band. This was indeed a nice treat and a great set of music....

Check out both bands as they will be back to play our local venues shortly....

Music Picks for Saturday, Feb 27th

Hurray for the Riff Raff - Marsh Woodwins - (blues, indie/gypsy/folk rock)

This promises to be a great show and is brought to us by Taint Radio www.taintradio.org Hurray for the Riff Raff is a New Orleans band that is well known on the Fringe scene down in the Big Easy - however they also split their time in Austin and have a sizeable following there as well.... Their musical stylings blend elements of folk, gypsy and some blues thrown in for good measure..... I actually caught a set of theirs last year at Ford Fest @ Big Top between the weeks of Jazz Fest. Very impressive - and a great music to allow you to sit, take a load off and enjoy the music. This band reminds me of what Leftover Salmon would sound like if they slowed down a bit... Talented vocals and musicians are what you will have in store and their musical style blends perfectly into the Carolina Folk Music Genre. Check out them at www.myspace.com/hurrayfortheriffraff - be sure to listen to "June Waltz" - it's perfect!
Samuel Doores - of New Orleans will open the evening - check him out at www.myspace.com/samdoores
Marsh Woodwins is located at 707 N. Person St - just North of the Old Krispy Kreme on the coner of Peace & Person. This is a "House Concert" - $10 bucks gets you great music and the chance to support at great little venue.... Show is EARLY - get there at around 8pm or so....

Music Picks for Wednesday, Feb 24th

Shannon McArthur & Jessica Long - Busy Bee (Rock, Indie)
Two very talented singer/songwriters will grace the Hive with their presence on Wed from 8-11. Both artists are very talented and this promises to be a solid set of rock and indie rock. Check out both Chapel Hill based Long & Charlotte based McArthur at www.myspace.com
The Hive is a small venue and this musical style will fit like a glove - good crowd and good beer will handle the rest. Come out and support this venue and these artists!

Music Picks for Monday, Feb 22

Now I usually try to focus on Raleigh shows but this is one not to be missed:
Leslie & the LY's - Local 506 (experimental)
This Ames, Iowa band is one part experimental hip-hop, one part theatrics, one part spoof, and one part over-the-top madness..... Leslie is high-energy crazy hip-hop and "clear the floor dance" theatrics.... Unbelieveable songs, crazy moves and the LY's add to the scene.
Be ready for anything because it can and will happen.
Sadly, I have some grownup things (board meeting) to do so Jeff and Amedeo, you two will have to carry the Torch - remember - no one is allowed home till three.....
Check her out on You Tube - and at www.myspace.com/lesliehall
Christopher the Conquered opens the set.....

It's time for a Crazy Monday - get out there and worry about Tuesday on Tuesday.....

Music Picks for Sunday, Feb 21

Sunday is usually a Slow day - but not this week - we have two great shows in store:

Della Mae & The Hotwires - Berkely Cafe (Bluegrass)
I am most certainly excited about this excellent, excellent, excellent all-female Bluegrass band from Boston. These ladies have an excellent harmonizing talent, and back it up with stellar Fiddle, Bass & Banjo. This promises to be a GREAT show - it's also an EARLY show (6pm Doors and 7pm show) - you will be home by 10pm or so....
These ladies will most certainly give a Hank Smith and co of The Hotwires as they open the set.
Check out these great bands at www.myspace.com/dellamaeband - esp a true winner - "Song for You" - this will win an award or awards and hit the charts....
www.myspace.com/thehotwiresband will get you access to the great songs of this Raleigh Bluegrass stalwart...

Dark Star Orchestra - Lincoln Theatre (Grateful Dead coverband)
This band claims to re-create the Grateful Death experiance and Sunday will be no different. For you lovers of the Death - this is the show for you......
'

Music Picks for Saturday, Feb 20

Jack the Radio - Slims (Rock)
This local band promises to have a solid set for you local rockers..... Check it out if you are out and about....

The Design - Lincoln Theatre - (Indie Rock)
This Raleigh Band is a solid, solid indie band. They bring an interesting mix that sounds like if you were to blend The Indigo Girls & 4 Non-Blonds. It is certainly most interesting and worthy of a look-see. Check them out on www.myspace.com/thedesignrocks and check out great songs like "Laziest Perfectionist" or "Storm to Weather".... Cool Kid Collective opens the show.

Music Picks for Thursday, Feb 18th

Tonight is a rather thin night on the music scene - not to worry - Bumble is going on @ The Busy Bee. This is a Solid, Solid set of Electronica - and not to be missed.....

Music Picks for Friday, Feb 19th

The Annuals - Pour House (Experimental Jazz/Funk/Indie Pop)
The Annuals are a mainstay of the Raleigh fringe music scene. I have allways enjoyed their shows and this promises to be a great show. Their blend of Indie Pop, Electronica & Jazz/Funk is sure to find a niche for all. Gray Young & Bright Young Things open the evening.
Find all three bands on Myspace.

Perpetual Groove - Lincoln Theatre (Jam Band - Indie/Funk)
This Athens, GA based band is a permanent fixture in the SouthEast and has regular gigs at most major cities in the region. Their sound is much like that of another great jam band - Particle - but they bring an added element of vocals and it certainly rounds out the show. Check them out at www.myspace.com/pgroove
Songs like "out here live" or "the noise" are great - but check out my fave "at the screen"
This WILL be a great show....

Hipslack - Napper Tandy's (Rap/Hip Hop covers)
I'm not sure what to expect with this show - a Friend passed me this lead and it certainly looks very interesting. This band plays old-school and new-school rap and hip hop covers and is very talented - my only hope is that they call up Bob G to sit in on one Beasties song.....
Check out their "Jump Around" video on You Tube!

Music Picks for Wed, Feb 18th

Scythian Tears up the Berkeley Cafe - (Irish Folk/Zydeco/Fusion)
This Band has been tearing up the D.C. scene for some time with their most interesting blend of Irish Folk and Zydeco elements. This is a great Wednesday show for those of you who have a hankering for lots of fiddles and folk music. Their links do not appear to be working but they can be found on You Tube under their band name.
Check it out!

Hey All!

Some Great Shows Tonite on this Valentines Eve... Check them out!

Zydecopious - Big Easy (Zydeco)
This Raleigh band is your quickest and easiest way to get your Zydeco/Cajun music fix in Raleigh. The Big Easy is the perfect venue for these guys - it's a great bar/resturant cut from the same cloth that you would find in New Orleans Marigny, Mid City, or Garden District - Cozy Bistro, Lounge on the side, Solid Bar and good music.... This is also the ONLY place in the Triangle where you can get Abita Amber on tap - which for me, is a taste of the motherland....
Zydecopious promises to be a great evening/night show and will keep you rocking and dancing till the music stops... Check them out: www.myspace.com/zydecopious

The Moaners - Slims (Indie Rock)
The Moaners are a Chapel Hill Band that have been on the indie scene for some time. They bring an interesting rock/folk/instrumental mix that allways promises to be interesting and a good show. I've caught a few of their shows and it is definitely worth checking out... Still interested? Check them out on myspace: www.myspace.com/themoaners
Demolition String Band and Chip Robinson open the show...

Lonnie Walker - Berkeley Cafe (hi-energy Indie Rock)
I don't think there is another musician out there with more energy than Lonnie Walker. This guy hits another gear that not only intrigues you, but pulls you into the show and the energy rubs off on you. This is allways an up-tempo - hi-energy show and it is not to be missed.
Gross Ghost and Onward Soldiers open the evening....

This is the latest rendition of the band that has been Barefoot Manner, No Strings Attached and now The Hotwires. This is an incredibly talented group of bluegrass musicians and it is in a great setting. Andrew Leager's Boylan Brew Pub - is an excellent local establishment serving up some great micro brews - it's also in a great location - offering the best view of the Raleigh Skyline.
Check out The Hotwires on myspace - www.myspace.com/thehotwiresband

Galatic funks up the Lincoln Theatre - New Orleans Style! (Funk/Jam) 8pm
These guys are in the New Orleans musical royalty - the Princes of Funk. Super Star Drummer Stanton Moore and krewe bring some of the best funk music that you will hear. They blend elements of rock, funk, jazz, blues and soul - making their sound truly unique. This is a truly special treat for us - we need to pack this place out and make these boys welcome. Given the Super Bowl Victory of the beloved Saints - get ready for a tribute to the Who Dat nation in exile with a rousing "Saints" song that WILL create belam for the Who Dats and the Neu Dats in the crowd.... Steep CanyonRangers w/ Thompson Brothers (of Old Habits) - Lincoln Theatre (Bluegrass)
Steep Canyon Rangers is by far, the BEST Bluegrass Band in the Carolinas and easily one of the best in the country. This band from Brevard/Asheville is constantly tearing up the Bluegrass charts - everytime they release another album or single. They are a talented group of musicians who have been together quite a long time and can harmonize with the best of them - check out their Acapella song/hymn "Can't sit down" or newer "Call the Captain" - these guys are truly treasures and we should be so fortunate to be able to have them call on Raleigh as much as they do.

Scott Miller - Berkeley Cafe (Bluegrass/Folk Rock)
Scott Miller has an uncanny ability to blend bluegrass and rock - with great vocal skills to go along with his masterful guitar style. He reminds me a lot of Grayson Capps. Scott has been on the scene for a little over 10 years - with the V-Roys, solo, and now with the Commonwealth. His ability to blend Bluegrass, Rock & Americana in the form of Appalachian Ballads is nothing short of amazing.
