Music Picks for Wednesday, March 31

Pretty Lights - Lincoln Theatre - (Electronica/HipHop Fusion)
Tonight must be the night for Electronica as this is one of two shows tonight in town. This Denver based band is a national touring act and blends elements of Electronica and HipHop for a truly unique sound sometimes called as "Psychedelicamania"... This will be a great show - it is Sold Out - but that does not mean anything - just get there at 8pm or so - when the doors open for any unclaimed tix.... This will be a great show.... www.myspace.com/prettylights

Sci Fi - Pourhouse - (Electronica / psychedelic jazz)
This is the more local of the shows - with Wilmington based Sci Fi headlining the evening. Their sound is more mellow that Pretty lights - more instrumental less vocals.... Really, Really Good lounge music. Blending some great beats and backbeats, their sound incorporates elements of jazz - I liken this to some of the early Thievery Corporation or Den of Thieves material. Bug will open the evening around 10 or so....

Jarrrod Gorbel - Berkeley Cafe (indie)
Powerful - Powerful - Powerful. This Brooklyn singer has quite the future ahead of him - his HIT song "10 years older" has certainly cemented his place in the music scene.. His simple melodies remind you of John Mayer or Ben Folds ...
www.myspace.com/jarrodgorbelmusic This should an EARLY show - 7pm start....

Ivan Neville's Dumpstafunk - Cats Cradle (Funk / Soul)
New Orleans Royalty is coming to the Cradle...... Dumpstafunk is simply amazing and on the cutting edge of the funk scene right now.... This area does not usually get to have such a treat - you have the perfect storm of organ, horns, drums, and guitar.... Don't be surprised if the Marsalis boys show up to sit in and jam out.... This has all the makings of a super crazy night!!!!
www.dumpstafunk.com

Music Picks for Saturday March 27

Zydecopious - Big Easy (Zydeco / Cajun)
This Raleigh band is likely the only local act where you can listen to Louisana Zydeco.... These guys, led by Kenny Shore are holding true to this sound and mix it up with some Cajun Country Rock faves - very entertaining, very good and certainly worth checking out. This is a free show - likely will start around 10 or so... www.myspace.com/zydecopious "born in the country" is a great one.....

Funkuponya - Oliver Twist (Funk)
Another Raleigh band that has a niche - funk music. These guys are the real thing with Brian Werner's funk drenched sound from the keys, Leo Kishore on the bass, Doug's guitar riffs and Chris on the drums.... Amazing! I have had them play for a house party and they tore it up. Likewise at shows at the Pourhouse and Berkeley. Look out North Raleigh! This will be a great show to check out... Start time is unknown - likely around 10 or so...
www.myspace.com/funkuponya - check out "Jims Chicken" - its a personal fave...

Caltrop & Static Minds - Berkeley Cafe (Rock)
Berkeley cafe plays host to "Let Feedback Ring Festival" and hosts two powerhouse rock bands:
Caltrop - a Chapel Hill band that is on the Metal side of rock - very good - excellent guitars and some pretty awesome uptempo stuff - there will be some headbangin going on....
www.myspace.com/caltropband
Static Minds - a local Raleigh favorite - a Rock band that draws more from the southern rock genre than metal - very very good... Check out my man Lucious on the bass.... Awesome backbeats....

Music Picks for Friday, March 26

Dirty Little Heaters - Pourhouse (Rock)
This might be part of the "Let Feedback Ring" festival weekend - but this band rocks! With Reese on guitar and vocals, the rest of the pieces fall into place. This is pure rock band - lots of crazy guitar riffs, great backbeat and the steady vocals make this a classic band to jump around to.... Check them out @ www.myspace.com/thedirtylittleheaters and check out "mexico way" or "untitled" Local Bands The Loaners & The Moaners open the night around 10pm

Parmalee - Deep South (Rock)
This Greenville, NC band really needs no introduction. They have made quite a name for themselves in the past few years playing with the likes of Matchbox Twenty, Sugar Ray & others. They bring a distinctive attitude to the stage with their brand of guitar driven rock and roll and the unique and infectious vocals. This is most certainly a show to catch - get there early as space (where you can see the band) is very limited. www.myspace.com/parmalee

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit - Lincoln Theatre (Rock / Classic Rock)
This Muscle Shoals, AL band is on the end of a tune-up run before a Tour of the land down under.... Their brand of hard rock is reminicent of the old Boston Band "Morphine". Great stuff, easy to listen to - not so easy to dance to - so grab a brew and sit or stand and listen to them jam. It will be a great show! Caleb Claude and the Bayonets open the evening. Expect the music to start around 9:30 or so.... www.myspace.com/jasonisbellmusic

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Music Picks for Thursday, March 25

Cougar Magnum - The Black Flower (Rock / Indie)
Local Rockers Cougar Magnum get your weekend started right. Come out and catch them rocking in their indie pop / rock / jam sort of way. This is a party band and it is certainly worth checking out... www..myspace.com/cougarmagnumrocks - be sure to check out my fave "take me out" Check venue for start times - likely will be 10pm...

Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles - Berkeley Cafe (Rock / Americana)
This Boston based band is about to embarq on a tour of the UK and is using this east coast run a a tune up. This is should be a great show - think of Joan Jett - if she was playing at her prime today... The voice, the superb musicianship... This is going to be a great show. It is truly amazing how the vocals and instruments can contrast and yet, still complement one another. Sarah is an amazing vocalist and brings together her band to put together a great sound.
Check them out @ www.myspace.com/borgesrocks - and be sure to check out "Better at the End of the Day" and "Modern Trick" - This will be an early show - look for it to start around 8:30 - which means you will be home early - or able to catch another show....

Thompson Brothers Band - Hibernian Raleigh (Bluegrass / Folk)
This Charlotte Based band is certainly one of the better bands that can play both bluegrass and Folk. These two are simply amazing... I surely hope we can have a good turnout for them so they visit this area frequently. They have a masterful sound of bass, drums, harmonica, guitar, ect - its almost like its not that the vocals harmonize, it's the instrumentrs do too... Simply amazing.... Check them out @ www.myspace.com/thethompsonbrothersband - listen to all the songs - they are great - I esp like "The Creek" but all of it is excellent - and see for yourself this Thursday.
Show should start around 10-10:30 and they will play several sets over the evening...

The Major Sevens - Lincoln Theatre - (Indie / Mult)
Boone based band blends all elements of bluegrass, rock, indie into their sound... At the very least it reminds you of a an early Wilco or Yonder Mtn String Band... www.myspace.com/themajorsevens
This is certainly worth checking out if your feeling like listening to something new on Thursday.... This will be an early show - expect the opening acts Joey Panzarella Band & Walter Wood Down to start around 8pm...

Bumble - The Hive @ Busy Bee - (Electronica)
Once again - come late nite and get your electronica fix at the Hive - allways a solid set and a great crowd....

Music Picks for Wednesday March 24

U-Melt - Pourhouse (Rock / Jam)
This band in is the midst of a national tour and Raleigh is fortunate to have them for an evening. It is very interesting how they are able to blend multiple genres to create their own sound.... They are a very good jam band - much like the band Particle. Check out their song "Honeysucker" - www.myspace.com/umelt
These guys are ready to make the next step and this tour will likely be a big part of that for them. Blue James Band will be opening the evening - expect the show to start 10-10:30
Wednesday is also mug night at the Pourhouse - be sure to bring your mug!

Sister Hazel - Lincoln Theatre (Rock)
This band needs no introduction - it has been on the national scene for years and they are on national tour hitting midsize venues across the country. Wednesday happens to be Raleigh's turn. Their new album "Release" is very, very good. Check them out if you have a hankering for a national act. Hopefully they will play my fave - "Mandolin Moon"....

Waylandsphere has been around forever - their mix of their rock stylings and covers of classic rock tunes is allways good and will draw a good crowd - catch them on Youtube.
Oatmeal Conspiracy is Raleigh's answer to what would happen if Widespread Panic started to play some indie rock - while still playing their usual stuff... This is an interesting mix of songs that can change dramatically and it is all good. This is definitely a band to check out.
Triple Wide is a Wilson, NC band that is attempting to break onto the local funk scene. I like what I've heard and I hope to hear her more this Wednesday.... They will be opening the evening - around 9 or so.....

Girls, Guns & Glory - Berkeley Cafe (Rock, Americanna)
Ever wonder what it would sound like if you combined Chris Isaak and Johnny Cash? Well, if you want to know - check out this Boston band. They have been recieving all sorts of accolades from far and wide. This band is the next hot thing in the style of Chris Isaak. Their stylings have been compared to Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chris Isaak, Hank Williams and a host of others. All talented musicians, they are able to play as well as support and compliment Ward's superb vocals... Their excellent ability to harmonize also draws from elements of Bluegrass which only makes their range more well-rounded, and impressive....
This is a show not to be missed. I for one will be there as this is certainly a band on the rise....
Check them out @ www.myspace.com/girlsgunsandglory
Show is at 8pm

Amelia's Mechanics - Pourhouse (BlueGrass / Folk)
This all-woman band from Greensboro has more than filled the void left by the departure of "Sweet bye & bye" - these ladies are all VERY VERY talented musicians and I honestly feel that they are the protege's of the Indigo Girls - take a listen to their song "Moonshine Driving" and you will most certainly know what I mean. Their vocal quality is on par or better than Bjork - very impressive - listening to "French Press" certainly supports that. These ladies are for real and most certainly worth a listen.... What really sucks here is that I cant be in two places at once - but if their show starts late (and knowing the Pourhouse, the likelihood of this happening is very good) I'll be there to catch the last half or so of the show.....
This is not to be missed by those of you who dig Bluegrass/Folk....
Check them out @ www.myspace.com/ameliasmechanics
Jim Avett is opening the show around 8-9pm....

Bumble - Busy Bee (Electronica)
Once again, we have the weekly stalwart of lounge/house music at the Hive - upstairs at the Busy Bee. This is THE place to get your electronica fix of the week.

Enjoy!!!

Billed by the Washington Post as one of the best new talents on the east coast, they made a big splash by winning the Grand Prize of Bill Board's "World Song Contest"... These accolades have fueled their continued success. Check out this show - there style is an uncanny mix of pure rock, indie rock, and it is able to seamlessly blend into a GREAT sound.... Cross Canadian Ragweed - Lincoln Theatre (Southern Rock / Folk Rock)
This Texas band has been tearing it up around the country for the past few years and now has a following as large as their home state. They are the purveyors of modern Southern Rock and the standard bearer of their band in the SE and countrywide. Recent recognition has gotten them a spot at Bonnaroo this year. Raleigh is VERY fortunate to get this caliber band on a Sunday show. This will be an EARLY show - so come out and pack out the Lincoln - to ensure a return visit and the opportunity of many more shows of this caliber in the future...
Check them out @ www.myspace.com/crosscanadianragweed songs like "constantly" "cry lonely" and my personal fave: "alabama" are certainly worth a listen and thrust me, they are even better live!

Monday, March 1, 2010

Music Picks for Friday, March 4

The Blue Dogs - Berkeley Cafe - (Folk Rock / Roots Rock)
There's just something about these guys..... I'm not sure if its because they remind me so much of my beloved Subdudes and those sets at Lafayette Square - playing hooky from work to catch their afternoon sets - in the shadow of my office at the Shell Building, their song "Never Been to Spain" -replacing the word Oklahoma for Ocracoke and thinking I'm swaying on the deck at SmacNally's watching the sunset or a combination of the both and the fact that this band from Charleston is immensely talented, powerful, and well loved for their music and their presence on the music scene for the better part of two decades. Maryanne has hit a homerun here getting these guys here (and back again on account of the snowstorm last month)..... This is a must see show.... If you like any kind of Southern Folk/Roots Rock - you will LOVE the Blue Dogs....
Check them out @ www.myspace.com/bluedogs - and check out their AWESOME rendition of "The RainKing" and my personal fave - "Never been to Spain"

Music Picks for Thursday, March 4

Jackass Flats & The Hotwires Tear it Up @ The Pourhouse (Bluegrass)
This is a true treat. One of the best Bluegrass Bands in Virgina play a show at the Pourhouse and are supported by Raleigh's very own Hotwires..... Jackass Flats hail from Richmond, VA and have an impressive set of musicians who also are very talented vocalists who can harmonize very, very well. This is going to be a great set of Bluegrass and the perfect place to get your bluegrass fix for the week! Hank Smith's Hotwires get the evening fired up as the opening band.... Check out Jackass Flats @ www.myspace.com/jackassflatsband

Bumble - The Hive @ The Busy Bee (Electronica)
Once again the weekly stalwart of electronica / lounge music is again at the Hive. This is a Solid set of lounge music and is VERY well attended. Get ready to dance late-nite!

Music Picks for Wednesday, March 3

Technoiz brings the Techno/Turntablism to the Pourhouse!!! (electronica, punk, trip-hop fusion)
Technoiz is a collection of bands headed by the Ex Monkeys and usually has a monthly gig at a local venue to show off their stuff. The result is some block rocking beats and the closest thing that Raleigh has to producing The Crystal Method or The Chemical Brother. SOLID SOLID stuff - with enough punk wedged into the music so you can get your head bangin fix while dancing your ass off until you are in a trancified state.... Looks like my Thursday is going to be shot after this set...... These guys are some talented turntablists and this monthly gig is NOT to be missed...
Check them out @ www.myspace.com/theexmonkeys - check out "twelve" - it rocks!

Music Picks for Tuesday, March 2

The Status - The Pourhouse - Indie /Rock
The Status is an Atlanta band that made it onto the scene by taking a chance and some luck. Their song "Perfect Day" soared up the Atlanta charts via their powerful indy radio 99X..... These guys are very similar to Deep Blue Something with plenty of melodic hooks and vocals that promises to keep the crowd rocking... This is an Excellent Tuesday show -and it's Free!
Kids of Survival opens the show - check out The Status @ www.myspace.com/thestatus
